henderson loader on M

I have a Henderson loader on a 47 Farmall M. It has one-way cylinders. They are about four feet long and have aluminum square blocks on the end. Currently oil squirts out of one from a hole near the top when the loader is lifted about half way. This happened with one of these cylinders before-- I had someone repair it but it was pricey. I was thinking of trying to do this myself. I'm assuming the seals are shot. I have never taken apart a cylinder before. How difficult might it be? What special tools will I need?

There are many types of cylinder sealing systems. Most I've seen dont need anything special in the way of tools.Need a picture of the 'gland' end to really help and advise you.

Those loafers aren't high tech. Determine which end unscrews, take that loose, and then pull out the cylinder. The end of it will have some sort of seal on it. The ones I have had were always a 2.00 oring from Napa. I found it easiest to leave the other end hooked to the tractor so you have a hand free when it comes time to guide it back in.

When I first started farming and was poor that was the only type of loader I had. One side had a rough spot in the cylinder bore and no amount of honing helped. I finally took out the Allen head screw in the other end and found that it was the same thread as a grease gun extension hose. I used that and flexible line and made a return to the reservoir. When the orings leaked past it ran right back into the system. I used it for years like that.
