Information on old planter

An Amish friend of mine bought some sort of old John Deere planter and he would like any kind of information he can get on it, because he has never seen one before. It has the number 463 on the top, it is horse drawn so has a seat, a seed cylinder, a plow shere (not sure if that is the right word, I would call it a one-bottom plow) and two small wheels on the back. Any information or links to some place I can get information, would be appreciated. Thank you!

Lister. desighned for dryland planting. The 'plow' (furrower) pushes the dry dirt away so the seed can get planted down in the moisture.The little furrow('ditch') also helps funnel moisture to the seedling and can be a windbreak for small succeptable plants.They were more common in Texas,Oklahoma,Kansas,Nebraska,Dacotas....Dad used one in Kansas when I was a kid.

Thanks for the information! I have looked up a lister, but all I seem to find are ones that apparently plant two rows at a time. His only looks like it plants one. Did your dad's plant one or two rows? And do you know of any websites on here that I could find the year(s) it was made and maybe some good pictures of it? Even though he has restored it as best he can, there are a couple of little things he isn't sure about.

No reason not to have been a 1 row and have seen pictures of 2,3, and 4 row models. Were never used in my area.

Dad's was a two row(3 point hitch) pulled by an 8NFord. the one row was probably intended to be pulled by one horse.I was pretty young at the time,really don't remember a whole lot.

They were called lister planters. Walking lister planters were way more prevalient, and because of them, and the decision by most farmers to not continue listing corn, way fewer opf the riding lister planters were made and sold. IF you were doing your garden, 2 horses could work for planting or listing up potatoes. If you were planting 5 or 10 acres, 3 or 4 horses were used. I don't think they were check row, so Im assuming you slide out the front wheels to where they sat in a furrow and the seed drop was where you wanted it to be, and the R front wheel acted as the guide.
