one row corn picker opinion?

I'm going to start looking for a one row corn picker and don't know how they compare. I would like one that does a good job of husking, will pick everything from pop corn to field corn, won't crush soft cobs, was common enough so there are still some around, and is mostly trouble free.

I have an IH PR-1 that works but someone replaced one of the husking rolls and put the tapered end on the downstream end. It looks like a lot of the machine has to come apart to get the husking bed out. Rather than take it apart and replace all the hardware I'll probably wind up breaking, maybe it is time to look at alternatives.

What would you look for ?

Thanks

Greg

Latest model new idea or John Deere that you can afford,
Just be sure the model you decide to buy, the dealership still supports that model with replacement parts,

As my experience, corn pickers and hay bailers will need parts as time goes on,

Pop corn can be the question, what type do you want to pick, the tiny ears or the varieties with large ears like field corn? If the large ears no problem there but the small tiny ears will go through any snaping rols without being snapped off. I do not know if any pickers were ever made with the stripper bar heads like combines have or not but they will get small ears that would go through regular snapping rolls.

New Idea 323. The snapping rollers can be set very close and should get small-eared popcorn as long as the ears are more than a foot off the ground. There are plenty of them out there yet and there are aftermarket parts and places that rebuild stuff like husking bed rollers for them, too.

Whatever you decide, keep your IH 1-PR. Use a 323 NI for a day and you'll want to sell it and use the 1-PR.

New Idea is about the only modern, semi supported picker left out there.

The IHC was somewhat common.

One row machines in any other color are very old and less capibale.

You really don't have a lot of options.

Like the OP said the tiny sized ears like strawberry popcorn will go on thru.AN old allis one row pull type#35 if i recall right has the snapping plates.and doesnt husk the best which should be good for pop corn.If you get a one row new idea #323 superpicker it will pick the best and the snapping rolls are angled more than the older style so you wont get so much shelling in the row and it will not break off stalks so bad.I dont know about IH or jd. I know the guys around here also liked the oliver #5.Just remember when working on it ALWAYS shut the picker off to unclog or make repairs.

The IH pickers were corn butchers. They would bust up smaller ears and drop[ them on the ground whereas other pickers would put them in the wagon. Maybe ok if you planned on running livestock on the stalks but I'd just as soon put it in the wagon and feed them with a pail. In the 50's New Idea and MM had the best pickers. NI stayed good while MM cheapened their picker up.

You might want to fix the IH. Don't know anything about popcorn though, always used ours on regular ear corn. Always seemed that our IH did a pretty good job. But I will admit to not having any experience with other brands. It's the only one we ever had. Can't say that we ever thought the corn left on the ground was significant.

Ford 601 side mount does the best job and will put any size ear in the wagon. Down side is they are a pain to mount up and ties up the tractor until you done picking corn for the season. Also some parts are no longer available like the rubber or quartz snapping rolls. Dad bought one new in 66 and I still have it but I just bought one to replace it that's bee sitting in a barn for the last 30+ years.

Greg I have used case, AC mounted 2 row, JD 1 row,JD 2 row mounted, New Idea. If I were to buy another it would be a New Idea.

I use a dearborn woods bros.. It does a great job. If you are patient you can find one in good condition.

Hay: Greg at RiverBend Farm; Opinons & advice on picking corn, Minnesota corn [because of your, sometimes short growing seasons, & odd fall weather], Soft ears, small ears, makes for very hard, snapping roll style picking, conditions ; I"ve picked just about every kind of corn, conventional & open pollinate , popcorn , blue & white & sweet corn for seed,, with snapping roll pickers , "not great success" ... We went to a adjustable striper plate corn head on JD 300 picker,[Husker] almost a 100% improvement over roll pickers , There is a JD. one row striper head made for choppers , It could [ with a fairly easy fabricating job be adapted to The 300 .. If you do go with a one row pull type picker I to would go with a late model NI. 323 , or maybe a JD 18...

Thanks Guys. I guess I'll have to go over to the neighbors and see what a stripper plate corn head looks like. It is great to have a place to ask a question and hear from people who have used the machines.
