Sickle section choices

Replacing all the sections in sickle for NH 488 mower-conditioner. Existing sections are over serrated. Any thoughts on over seratted versus under serrated? Thanks.

Take a look at a previous discussion <a href="http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=implment&th=163432%253E">"[i:654c4848f0]sickle sections, top serrated or underserrated[/i:654c4848f0]"</a> from several years ago.

The type of section to use may depend on the type of crop being cut.

Hope this helps.

I have a 488. No mater which you buy for gosh sakes get the chromed sections. They are tougher than mild steel ones. I did not the first time I filled the sickle, refilled it 3 days later with chromed sections.

I'm not sure it makes all that much difference although, like everything else I am sure there are people who will want to aggressively argue the point. Big thing I have found is that sharp and properly adjusted beats any other variables.

My understanding is top serrated are self sharpening. My Hesston 1110 manual says this and further says not to use underserrated sections.

Here is a thread I started on this subject a while back:

Self Sharpening

"Self sharpening sickle sections are right up there with the Perpetual Motion Machine."

I guess that settles it.......
