PTO Shaft to long

Also done it many times. Just need to remember to cut off both the inner and outer shafts and also the guards. Also inner and outer.Good to make the shaft about an inch longer than the guard to facilitate assembly.

Some shafts can be cut, others cannot be cut, first you have to determine what you have.

(quoted from post at 07:07:26 04/16/16) You're right on some older shafts the square tubing on the female end is welded in and only runs a short distance.

Older sq & rectangular shaft can be shortened/lengthened. BTDT One needs to concentrate on rd tubing not the short end with the sq/rectangular internals. Also need to be sure to maintain phase(timing) of opposing u-joints/yokes when shortening/lengthening pto shafts.

The outside parts of the square shaft on some have a large cast end on them that you do not dare to cut as it will let the square tube part of the shaft split lengthwise. That cast part also controls the alignment of the 2 halves of the shaft.

The sq & rectangular female pto shafts that I've altered the length have slip sleeves similar to photo. As I stated these type pto shafts are relatively easy to alter the length when utilizing correct size tubing in between slip sleeve & yoke keeping in mind to phase(time) correctly
