just bought a pretty good used round baler only to find that the PTO cv joint was shot parts to rebuild v expensive and replacement part was
over $1000. Any idea for getting a used one?
Evidently the same shaft fits nh 630 and 640 part number 9600269

Thanks

CV joint blew up on our 630.

You can cut the CV part out and get a normal cross and reuse the shaft and tractor coupler. (takes some cutting) but you can fix this for $25 or so and have no CV joint to mess up.

Only draw bar is you can't turn super sharp, but that isn't a bad thing on these balers given the number of hitches I've seen broken or bent from someone turning too sharp and putting the tractor tire into the machine.

I removed worn out CV joint on my JD rd baler & installed single u-joint attempting to save $$$$. I noticed chains & belts would flop excessively even on slight turns. I threw longest chain off in a turn so I gave in and purchased a new aftermarket shaft for tractor end.

Unless one turns pto off in turns I advise against eliminating CV joint even as much as I hate the high $$$$$$ CV joint. YMMV!

our local welding shop stocks that stuff far cheaper than the dealers. Seems to be quality stuff.

I will add I've been running single joint for 4 years now with no issues. Just can't turn really sharp, might be different on a Deere, but works ok for the small NH like the OP has, no belting or chain issues.

I didn't state operating equipment with single u-joint can't be done but even in a slight turn pto shaft of implement rpm's varies up & down during turning process. Sharper the turn the wider variation in pto rpm's. This rpm variation also applies to the drawn implement. I too baled hay for a short period but decided manufactures put CV joints on new equipment for a ""very good reason"".

Thanks guys. I spent a lot of time talking to salvage yards with no good answers. I found an aftermarket A&I shaft for $200 less than anywhere else from http://www.tractorsmart.com, which arrived in good time and seems perfect

The 640 I had didn't come with a cv joint, it was an early 94 model and when I sold it in 2014 at 20 years old it still has the original joints in the drive line. The ujoints would rattle if you turned real sharp so I didn't.
