I have a 2011 John Deere 6330. That is 105 engine, 85 draw bar horsepower. My farm is in need of plowing up some dirt in order to repair some of the conservation terraces. Can anyone suggest a good plow for me to be looking for? I think my tractor should pull a 4 bottom plow, and I would probably favor a John Deere. Is a pull plow, or 3 point in my better interest? Never used a plow much before, in fact, the 6330 is 5 years old now and has 156 hours on it, so you might guess it was an expensive toy and not be wrong. But I would like (I think) a 4 bottom pull plow with hydraulic cylinder on it. Any model numbers come to mind? I'm in Kansas.

I like Semi mounted plows the best maybe a John Deere f145h not sure what models of international semi mount plows . Could go with a rollover plow they make nice work of a square field just start on one edge of the field and work forth and back across the field

A 4-bottom should be a good match for your tractor but that would be the largest you'd want. I agree with vscummins that a semi-mount would be the best with a pull-type being my next choice. I'd avoid a three-point model for terrace work since it would be harder to make the required turns with the plow in the ground. Plus, here in Kansas larger 3-point plows like this would be less common to find. Although you said you prefer Deere the International 700, 710, and 720 plows are also very good. In fact, if you're just needing it for terrace work most any plow will work, even older low-clearance models that go cheap at farm auctions.

We had several different makes of plows at the farm over the years; it turned out that the Oliver plows were the best of them all.

If you don't have to plow heavy cornstalks an Oliver 565 4-16 wouldn't cost you much and are a good older plow, a 508/548 White or it's JI Case/Ford equivalent would also be a good one, as far as I am concerned jd never did make a plow until the 2800's,the 145's were especially light built and never stood up ,IH plows are ok but the auto reset models cheat in hard pulling ground

IH 700 series semi mounted plows can't be beat. JD F145 semi mount is good also. Good luck.

I have a 6-18 IH 720 plow, and 4 and 5-18 White (Oliver) plows. The Whites turn a much better furrow than the IH...you can tell the difference when they"re in the same field. 720 also likes to go shallow if the point lands on a cornstalk after tripping. The Whites stay down and plow.

The frogs bend on a 145 even without rocks and they have poor trash clearance. If you think they are the best you haven't run anything else.

I've broke out countless acres of sage Brush and rocks with a John Deere 4 bottom mounted plow and the only thing I broke was the tail wheel took it off and kept plowing with a turned a 4430 John Deere weighted down and fluid in the tires . I guess you could tear one up if you hooked a 200 hp tractor to it and turned the 13 year old kid loose with it

I have a JD 6110R (it replaced my JD 6230) and I pull a JD F620 4-16 pull plow with it. Personally I like the pull plows better than a 3-point. You will easily be able to pull a 4-16 plow with it in any soil condition. Any of the four bottom JD F6xx plows would be fine or even the JD 555 or 666 pull plow. They are all basically the same. But in some areas of the country these older JD pull plows maybe hard to find. And, yes I understand your JD 6230 was an expensive toy. I just hobby farm too and spend all my farm profits at my JD dealer. Send me an email if you have any questions on the JD pull plows. Al

I see the problem you pulled one with a 4430. The neighbor that would bend the frogs used a 1066! A neighbor with a 145 once borrowed our 565 Oliver and couldn't believe how much more trash it would go through so we pretty much figured there was no reason for a person to own a pos when there were better plows made, an Oliver also pulls easier because it is hooked closer to the tractor, if you like them good for you, I'm just trying to prevent someone from making a mistake

Hey--thanks for your replies here on what plow. I think I will be looking for an Oliver semi mount--but one of the Deere pull types will come home too if one pops up. Tractor sales man at JD was called today--maybe he will find me one. Thanks again. bruce

I have a white 508 5-16 spring reset. I pull it with an IH 1066. It is the best plow that I have ever owned. Turns a very nice furrow and even does a very clean job on old sod. I'd stick to the Whites or Olivers if you can find them. Usually Whites run around $2500 here in the northeast for a good set.

Bull crap I've never bent a frog Since you know so much about my farm and what I've plowed tell me how Is it you can bend them and I can't total a bs story or p*ss poor operator or a case guy that's got his little feelings hurt becuase they had to buy an Oliver plow because they couldn't make one . Most likely you never actually even seen the plow or pulled one . Maybe John Deere came to the president of the company 100 years after his death in a dream and said hey be sure and build one plow with good frogs and then make sure he somehow this guy finds it 30 years after that used

Lots of good plows that will do just fine and If you can buy a tractor like that to play with a little diesel bill won't hurt ya if you need to run a field cultivator or disc or both then a Harrow to smooth out the ground the way you want it . Around here we plow in the fall so we want the ground rough to ketch any snow and rain we do get . A plow is not a seedbed tillage tool you don't just plow and then drill or plant there's always some type of secondary tillage at least one pass before you put seed in the ground if your wanting something to grow anyway

I agree with you. My dad always had a JD plow back as far as 1939 and we never bent a frog either. But maybe I don't have a lot stones and I don't plow that fast. Never plowed faster than 2nd gear with my 2-cylinder JD 830 and even now I don't plow faster than about 3 miles an hour with the JD 6110R. Al

Did he also stick a bolt through to hold the spring from tripping on the saftey reset ? I think there are lots of good plows John Deere doesn't have to be the best but that's what I like and have never bent or Broke a frog on any plow I've only pulled melroe plows ih and John Deere I've ripped bottoms off before in bad rocks but never bent or broke anything besides bolts
