Finish Mowers

A couple of questions about finish mowers.

1) When you set up a rough cut mower or a lawn mower, you usually want the deck to pitch forward a little bit, so that you are cutting with the leading edge of the blades, using less power, and so on. On a finish mower with wheels at all four corners, is the pitch already factored into the frame, or do you need to set the pitch using your height spacers?

2) As far as performance, quality and power requirements...or anything else that comes to mind, what are the differences between side discharge and rear discharge finish mowers? I picked up a Rhino FM72 about three weeks ago on a deal I couldn't pass up but I've always kind of thought a rear discharge would be more desirable because it would leave a more uniform discharge pattern and probably require less hp because you don't have to move all that material from one side of the deck to the other. There don't seem to be near as many rear discharge mowers for sale though.

Its been a few years since I had a finish mower but as I recall you set the pitch by the height spacers.

I have had rear discharge and front discharge and prefer rear since it spreads the clippings out instead ow windrowing them like the side discharge does. Not a huge deal unless you are cutting very tall grass.

One caution: Finish mowers are not brush hogs. They don't like tall grass or tree sprouts but small 1/4 inch ones are ok to cut.

I have a 7' Woods rear discharge three point finish mower. I set the cutting height with the spacers, so the deck is level. A level deck does the smoothest cutting job, but does take some more power.

My biggest gripe with the side discharge is the chute sticking way out the side.

I have a rear discharge rhino TM60 and it really eats the grass. Somedays I wish I had a side discharge cause I think it would mulch the grass more before discharging. It leaves more clippings on top vs my smaller side discharge lawn mower. The side discharge also lays out the grass more consistently than the rear model. I don't use it in the yard when I want it to look nice for those reasons.
