Moco Impeller / Flails - Maceration????

You folks with impeller / flail mower conditioners. With GRASS hay - how do you set your impellers/flails for conditioning? Far apart from the hood for gentle conditioning - which may or may not dry as quickly? Or to you set your impeller/flails close to the hood as possible for maximum maceration and quickest dry down? No leaf issues with grass hay - right? For grass hay - what's the down side of this?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Bill

My Kuhn had a two speed gearbox on the impellers and I think it's 8 positions on the hood. I run it in high speed with the hood as close to the impellers as it will go. It pounds it up and leaves it as soft and palatable as the old New Idea Cut/Ditioner did.

soo many variables here ,,,, how thick is the hay? you might have to readjust for every field I have impellers and set it so a few hours after I mow the hay looks like it has a bruise on it .

I have a NH 7330 with the impellers. I set the space as close as possible, 3/4 in, and go. I'm mowing mostly coastal Bermuda and Klein grass. Had the mower for 2 years now haven't had to change the setting yet.

Thanks for the replies. I have spent a goodly googling this topic, in addition to posting here - and it sounds like most with impeller / flail type mower conditioners are setting them close to the hood for max conditioning - with GRASS hay.
