JD 7000 corn meters

Hi guys,
I have a 6 row JD 7000 corn planter finger style meter that I am going to replace the corn meters. I haven't priced them at mother deer yet, but Shoup's has them for $180. How does Shoup meters compare to anyone else's. Where else do you recommend to buy them from? Thanks for your input. Also what do you think of Shoup's bean meters.

I work on meters and the Shoup parts are now Precision Planting parts. The finger carrier is pretty similar to an original Deere carrier with the exception of having each finger numbered. I prefer to use the Deere finger carrier due to shorter fingers that help even more to eliminate doubles. However, the PP parts are fine and will cost a little less. The PP back plate and other parts are nice upgrades. Mike

Why replace them???? I have rebuilt hundreds of them over the years. They will work great for many acres for a heck of a lot less than $180 each.

Can you get the plastic plate that connects the meter to the planting unit. Mine are all cracked up where you bolt them to the planter. I rebuilt them on my 1240 JD and it planted fine. I just want it done right. Does the John Deere dealership rebuild them? Are there correct torque settings for the main nut?

The mounting/baffle is $11.69 each for JD. The nut that holds the finger unit against the plate is the only adjustment on a finger pickup. There is an inch lbs. torque setting but I NEVER have set them that way. All your doing is setting how hard the plastic back of the finger assembly rubs the knockout plate/cradle. I just set them to where I can barely turn them comfortably with my fingers. That works. I have ran hundreds of them on test stands and never had to rest that torque. Many snake oil sales type of companies telling uneducated guys that they can "set" their units for so many dollars.

Here is all you need to do on a JD plateless meter:

1) Replace the brush on the cradle each year.
2) Make sure the belt is good and flexible If it is hard then replace it.
3) Check the ridge/bump that the fingers rub across on the cradle. If it is worn replace the cradle. Hint they usually only will show rust in a circle across that dimple when they are shot.
4) The drive bearing should turn real free with the finger assemble removed.
5) Check that all the springs on the finger assembly are good and have about the same tension. Just flip them with your finger and you can tell when there is a bad one.

Truthfully they are pretty simple to work on.
