Oliver plow update

I have been taking the plow apart---The guy who was the purchasing agent for the Oliver plow works must of had a brother that sold 5/8's fine threaded bolts. I tried my 1/2 in. impact-got a few out, so I have been using my 1 in. It will turn them about 2 turns and then a lot of them will gaul-cross thread-seize what ever you want to call it. They will either twist of off or just spin. Torch time. I have never seen a piece of machinery so wore out or busted, Here are some pictures. This is the 2 x2 cross piece where the hitch bolts to.

Wire brush what you can off the exposed threads and use Kroil. If they don't come right off work the nut back and forth and it will come a little more each time.

That piece that has been cobbled up seems to be repaired on many of those plows. It also looks like the bottom arm on your front furrow wheel has been repaired, another common problem area on the ones we have had. Is your front lever free to pivot on the steerable front wheel? It usually requires a good amount of heat to get it to move. I am pretty sure you have a 4441 plow and not a 4440. Your fourth beam runs straight from the front to the rear and on a 4440 it angles towards the third beam at the front ahead of the land wheel. I use a 4441 4-14 behind our super 99. Enjoy your project.

Dad beefed up the hitch on this Moline/Oliver plow when he added a bottom and pulled it with the A.C.
Must have done better, never came apart after he fixed it.

If you think you can pull 6 with your 99 you should find an on-land hitch. Notice what Hunt said, around here 4-16's or 5-14's would be a good load unless your 99 has a hopped up N series engine.

(quoted from post at 06:32:19 03/16/16) From your pictures it looks like some farmers shouldn't be allowed to have a welder.

Or welders should not be sold without a grinder.

Reminds me of my IH #60 plow, I probably should have sent it to the scrap heap but resurrected it. I fixed more egg-shaped holes and worn parts then want to count. Once you are turning over some nice furrows it will be worth the work.

I like seeing the old IH implements with the blue paint. Usually they are red only.
