John Deere Flex 71 Planters

This is my second year planting peanuts, so I do not know very much. Last year I was in partnership with a fellow and we used his fairly new JD planter.

This year I am planting my own and I have accumulated a trailer full of stuff I am assembling into a 4 row planter using JD flex 71's on an old KMC tool bar.

My question...Do I have these wheels set up right?

Thanks!

What you have looks just like the picture in the 71 operator's manual. It notes that the bottom of the toolbar should be set about 20 inches above the seeding depth - if you're planting two inches deep the bar should be 18 inches above the ground. The amount of threaded rod exposed above and below the turnbuckle should be not more than 5.5 inches and you can use any of the three holes in the mast plates to make sure the linkage isn't over-extended with your desired seeding depth.

Thanks for the information. The measurements from the toolbar are particularly helpful to me. I also noted you knew peanuts are planted 2" deep:) I'll put the planters on and give it a try.

Thanks Again!

I don't claim to know anything about planting peanuts - not too many of them here in Kansas! I guess I got lucky since that example of a 2" seeding depth was right out of the book.

If you don't have a 71 manual yet I'd sure recommend getting one. There's a lot of information in there, including how to set up the peanut hopper bottoms. There's usually quite a few of them for sale on eBay for reasonable prices.

Thanks for the comments about tire spacing.
I am planting 36 inch rows and the tractor tires are 6 ft so they are between rows... I set the planter tires 18" beyond the outside planters so they should be in between as well.

Thanks!

The good thing about running the tool bar tires at 18" out is that you will run said tires in the same track on the next pass. Helps to keep your row spacing even!

Thanks for pointing out using the planter tires as row markers...Hadn't thought of that!

Good Idea...sounds like experience talking:)
