JD 80 unit planters

There's maybe six units of a No. 80 planter in a scrapyard and the guy gets $.20 a pound for them
. I've read they're called a platless planter, I'not familar with that style. I had a four row 71
flex planter that I sold a few year ago and they use plastic plates to meter the seed. I'd maybe
pickup a couple of them for garden planting corn, if you guys thought they'd be worth the
probably $50-$60 dollars for a pair. Or would I just be throwing my money away. Don't need more
money pits than I already have. bjr

They have the same plateless planting process as the 1240 plateless planter. This is the early version of what is now called Deere's finger pick-up system. Most were sold with runner openers. The finger pick-up systems on all planters require maintenance and sometimes need fingers, springs, etc. replaced, so you may want to inspect the 80 planting units to see if they are in working condition. Your 71 Flexi-Planters are a simpler operating, lower tech piece of equipment, but are very reliable.

If those planter units are the same as on the JD 1240 planters then run away as fast as you can. They were JD's first efforts at a plateless planter and can be frustrating to clean out or repair.

If those units are what are called "7000" or 7200" meters than you have a good start. Main parts are a backing plate and a finger set which wear first....they cost about $35.00 each. The seed belt costs about $11.00 and should be replaced. The brush will be worn out, but they only cost about $2-3.00 each.

The older JD plate-type planters are of a good design (so is IH), but nearly everyone of those old planter units are worn out and good parts are harder to find...especially the floor plate. Plastic plates are easy to find, thousands of them are still hanging on nails in old machine sheds or shops.

You probably need to take a unit apart to see how badly worn they are before buying.
