Planter plates

How difficult is it to locate and purchase the right plates for a given planter? I found an International 4 row but it only has corn plates and I wish to plant soybeans. Presently, I do not know the model number. My guess would be the planter is 1960's vintage. Thanks for your replies!

If it was a common planter with a lot sold, I would think it would be fairly easy. Did you shop around like at Shoup or other places?

IH planters use 'C' series plates. There should be thousands/millions of the floating around in farmers barns in soybean country.
Lincoln Ag Products,Evergreen,Colorado. They make and sell planter plates.$16.00 each includes shipping.(303)658-0281. Call em.
Also, talk to your seed dealer/supplier.

As DeltaRed indicated, any IH planter is very easy to find plates for as they all used the same
style. If you have any older farmers in your area who are into IH equipment you might ask around
to see if they have any left-overs you might be able to get for next to nothing. I was given a
whole box full of Deere plates from a farmer friend who had them setting in his shed for years and
was glad to get rid of them.

If you're shopping for a plate-style planter I would suggest focusing on either IH or Deere as with
any other brand the availability (which leads to affordability) of plates goes down fast. The one
exception to this would be Allis Chalmers since with a simple and readily available adapter they
can use Deere plates.

Store I got to last year had every plate made for Deere or IHC hanging from celing for sale.

Cylinder lift could be 449-449A-450-56-58 and newer I do not know. the 449-450 has seed box on front and openers only lift, can also be mechanical lift. 56 up seed boxes on back and only cylinder lift and complete frame lifts to lift openers.

Happy,
I was in the seed business when there were still a lot of plate type planters. Every Spring someone asks about plates, so back in 4-3-09 I wrote a long article called "Plate type planters and plates to match your seed size".

I don't know how to bring that article up to today's date, but someone on here will know how to do that....and my thanks goes to them.

Any further questions, please ask.

Thanks LA and everyone else for the replies. All good info and definitely makes a purchase decision easier to make! I grew up on a central Iowa farm but just not sure about details on some of these old implements I am purchasing for food plot work. Greatly appreciated!

Just a thought, but eBay is a marvelous place, as long as you do your homework. I believe IH used pretty much the same plates for many years, and you see LOTS of them listed. Whether they would be the correct ones is another question.
