fertilizer openers

Need to replace the fertilizer discs on my jd 494 corn planter. Dealer wants $80 @ disc. Need 8 of them. Any other sources around? Shoup does not list them for 494. Just too old. Thanks in advance

Do you just need the disc blades, or do you need the hub as well?

Often can find a blade that fits the hub, but if you need the hub new as well it gets more interesting, costly.

yup, I need the whole disc/hub. Haven't been putting starter on the corn. just broad cast. would like to go 2x2. Have most every thing else.

I'm not familiar with the 494, but for my 7000 I have removed the rivets holding the blade to the hub (may take some drilling) and replaced the bearing in the hub (if the hub metal is good) and bolted the blade to the hub with lock nuts on the bolts (nuts on the inside).

Have you tried calling Shoups or just looked in their catalog? I'd be calling them if it was me.

I ran into the same thing with my 1240 jd last year. It is not the ultimate correct answer, but I took the seed opener discs and hubs and moved them up the fertilizer discs. They were worn down to fit the dry fertilizer assembly's perfectly. I then put new discs on the seed openers. The cheapest way was to keep the hub and replace suspect bearings and just replace the disc. I ground the rivets off and put 1/4" grade 5 bolts and lock nuts in there place. That way I could replace bearings that go bad down the road. I'm sure the rivets are a tighter fit, but I have planted 100 acres with it and they all work fine still. I called around and could have a company that could make the hub, bearing and disc, but it wasn't much of a savings. I just bought the disc's from John Deere. They were like $19 a piece I think.

I have four of these openers off a 7000. $120 for the set.
