its spring so the creepy crawlers (snakes) will soon be coming out

what do you guys use around the tool shed and shop to keep the snakes away.

I have cats and they will hiss at them sometimes, but are no match for a big copperhead

what about mothballs spread around in the barns?????

I am up for most anything, as I hate snakes and apparently they do not like me.

I have heard that using sulfur works well. Also, limestone being highly alkaline burns their belly. First I would start out getting the snakes' food source which is rodents under control. Both parties like plenty of junk and tall grass to hide in so that needs to be dealt with as well. Short grass helps bird predators such as hawks hunt the snakes. If you do not mind having some pigs around they are also consumers of snakes. Even penned up the feed draws the mice which in turn draws the snakes which in turn the pigs eat the snakes. Their are some snakes that I think a pig will not tangle with such as a big rattler but it sounds like that is not a problem.

You mean like this guy? He/she seems to like whatever can be had in the attic above my shop. I think he's after birds. More power to him. gm

Rattlesnakes have been out for quite awhile in AZ due to the warm weather. A snowbird stuck his hand in where he shouldn't have and darn near died from the snake bite coupled with his own health problems. He spent several day in the hospital.

We have a pair of Roadrunners that built a nest in a tree just across the street from us; they will take a small snake if they find it. Lizards are their favorite thing to eat. This morning one of the Roadrunners was in our front yard searching our bushes for something to eat, but I've never seen anything in those that a carnivore bird would want - maybe looking for a small bird trying to keep warm in the bushes?

Don't worry about those scalped parts in my yard each summer. That's what happens when I find a snake with the mower. Got to make sure you got them. If it's someplace I mow it's too close to the house. I have enough trouble with snakes in this old house without making it enviting.

Learn to identify the different species. Almost every "copperhead" people see is completely harmless - milk snakes, water snakes, etc., even those big black snakes.

Limestone does not seem to bother the snakes in Central Iowa. They live in the limestone outcroppings. They even like to slither out onto our limestone rural roads for a little sunbathing. Many of the older homes have limestone rock foundations. They also have the occasional snake take up residence. just saying. gobble
