New Holland 271

Looking at purchasing my first square baler, there is a 271 baler that needs work, owners say they baled with it in the past few years but one of the bill hooks is hanging up on a twine finger. Is there a common reason behind this or is it difficult to fix?

Common problem. Fixed by simple adjustments. Buy an owners Manual.Adjust by the book, from start to finish. It will bale like a new
one. At about 40 bucks, the best, cheapest thing you will ever buy for your 'new' baler.

I have a NH271 that we pulled out of a fence row and after freeing up stuck parts and stiff chains it has done a good job for around 10 years now. Good old balers and with a good manual and a bit of TLC they can be turned form almost dead back to something that works well

If the twine finger is "hanging up" on the bill hook, you'll need a lot more than an owner's manual. The twine fingers are 2 inches below the bill hooks with the stripper arms and the bill hook cams between them.......Ron

Allis,

In addition to what Delta Red said about the necessity of obtaining a manual and following it a "T", you might also want to go to youtube and search on "New Holland knotter". There are a bunch of videos about how the knotter works, but one of them is an actual training video that NH produced many years ago for their field technicians on HOW the knotter works. If you have a pretty good understanding of how it works, the manual makes much more sense when you actually start adjusting things.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

You can download a PDF manual from New Holland's website with a credit card. I have the one for my trusty 68 on my tablet. Handy to have
for reference and you can print out the pages if you don't want to get the tablet greasy....

Below is is a link to the New Holland knotter video.

Don't own a 271, but what little experience I have with a New Holland baler is - they are very simple to work on and if set up and operated
correctly, a great baler. However, be prepared for some knuckle busting, rusted bolts, adjustments and some new parts.

When you get an old baler going - life is good!

Good luck,
Bill
