8n draw bar

My father in law has a 52 Ford 8n with a Sherman transmission and the mid mount sickle mower. We restored it a few years back and we needed a way to move the manure spreader and other trailers with the mower on. The pulley has such a tight clearance that you can't use a swinging draw bar so here is what I built. It's all self explanatory, hooked onto the lift arm pins and the bar across the back bolts together. Works great! Feel free to steal my design AT YOUR OWN RISK!

You are going to break something when the hitch is pushed sideways! Since it is bolted together the frame of the hitch can move without any resistance except to the attaching points.

I agree. Put a couple of 45 degree braces from the center equidistant to the sides.Acctually,I think I would use two braces instead of the one centered. Bring em together at the toplink mount, then secure down to the corners in an upside down 'V'. However, pretty good idea!

That basic design has been around for many years. I agree that you do need the stay bars coming from the top link down to the side corners.

I actually went back and welded the one side solid and put tabs on the other to keep it from twisting. The more really limits the space you have to work with.

I scrapped 1 that had a draw bar similar to that. Been a couple of years ago. The owner had an old Case mower bolted to it. Sold the mower for what I paid for the whole works.

The correct drawbar(at least what we had) looks like yours, with a vee that the tip extends past the drawbar. The tip was where you actually hooked to,and the other ends of the vee went under the lower arms, just ahead of the lift arms where they turned up.They had jay bolts that secured them to the lower arms, which stopped side to side movement.Usually we used the 'stays' which went from the top link bracket,to the outside of the drawbar, which held it at a certain height.Mark
