turning plows

Ive been around tractors and farming most all my life although not a farmer. Now, as a hobby , I buy old dead tractors to either wake up or part out. Occasionally, I get equipment with them. 10-15 years ago, you could not give away any type of turning plow. Now they go like hot cakes. What has changed to cause that. I'm in N. MS.

Could be just supply and demand. The price of steel got so high that a whole bunch of them went to the crusher.

Over the last few years scrap metal prices got out of sight, when it was so high,

Many old pieces of equipment were gathered up and taken to the scraper,

I think that is what happen to old plows, disc, rollers, etc,

There has also been a rising interest in restoring some implements to go with an antique tractor, as well as the antique plow day phenomenon that has popped up all over the country. So now you have a situation where people are looking for old plows to buy but due to the scrap prices of the recent past, supply to pick from is much thinner. More modern plows have also made a comeback in prices. Some farmers who were minimum or no-tilling have decided to go back to burying everything in an effort to deal with herbicide resistant weeds and insect and fungal pressure caused by all that residue laying on top.

In addition to what others have posted, I believe that a lot of small marginal acreages have become homesites and the owners wish to put old or new equipment to work. They are dealing with patches or small acreage parcels that have not produced anything but weeds or grass for several years. The only way to get rid of allthat topside organic matter and create a decent seedbed is by moldboard plowing. Justmy opinion gobble

People showing tractors at shows are starting to catch on....just parking a tractor in a long line and walking away; the result is boring.

Add an implement or two to your exhibit and you will have spectators stopping to look and taking pictures.

something that has started around here is having a plowing day.
some people get together with some tractors and plows and have at it.
that way people have a way to use their tractors and do something other than look at them and have smwmo gripping about all those tractors " you think more of those old hunks of junk than you do me if i were to leave you would not know i was missing until it was time to eat then you would go to smokey joe's for a burger and a beer".

Just a few years ago you could find good 2/3 bottom plows and heavy disks any day of the week.

After the scrappers started swarming like locusts all that old iron is gone for good. I've been looking for a 2 bottom turning plow for over a year and haven't found one in my area yet.

Good heavy anvils are as scarce as purple unicorns for the same reason. Dang scrap locusts. :x

Also , here in Iowa, the deer hunter food plot craze has created a market. I grew up on a farm but am not a farmer by profession. I own a Farmall M, Little genius 2-16 plow, an Allis Chalmers disc, and a cultipacker just to attract deer. And hey, its a lot of fun!

picture of my MF 3x12" they do a great job if there is little trash on the ground, but will choke easily as 12" plows have a smaller throat area, 14" or 16" do a much better job if there is trash on the ground.

picture of my buddies Ferguson Bullet Disc Plow, guess they called them that because the frame looks like a large military round.

Old wife's tale: a Ferguson wrench was shipped inside the bullet frame tube as each end cap will come off, I never checked either mine or his plow to see if there was one inside. I still have the factory set of tools that came with my 1957 TO35 so I have one, also have the original owners manual for the old tactor.
