NH #54A Bale Thrower speed control

Hoping the picture of my 54A speed adjuster posts correctly. The thrower control crank handle that you turn from the tractor seat is attached to the idler pulley adjuster by a "hose" about a foot long. the hose simply twists up when you crank the handle, it will not turn the pulley adjuster. Is this set up correctly

here is the photo

The end of the crank handle is supposed to go through the bracket. The hose should be about 6-8" long and be bent in a fairly sharp 90 degree shape. Hydraulic hose, as stated.

Thanks Rick, how does the crank handle get secured to the bracket? Do shaft collars need to be mounted on the crank handle shaft in order to prevent it from going thru or coming out of the bracket? also, the hose pictured is actually the genuine NH part and not a scrap piece of hose from the back of the shop. This part came with 5 ball bearings (look like extra large BB's)that I have no idea where they go.

Remember the baler has to be hooked up your tractor and running in order to adjust the speed of the thrower , if you don't have it running the hose will just twist up in a knot

I just went out to the machine shed and had a look at my baler and mine looks just like your photo , the crank handle does not go into the bracket because it has to move back and forth when moving the tongue back and forth from field position to transport position

I'm still scratching my head, arte. As you can see in the picture, there is a grease zerk in the bracket...something must go in there besides the hose! Does your bracket have a zerk ? (after all mine is only 45 years old, who knows it could have been added by someone).

My baler is just as old , they made stuff good 40 some odd years ago ! yes mine has the grease zerk , I'm uploading a photo to show you that mine is the same . I agree that its a bit of a strange set up, but in reality its simple and it works !

now that I have my photo uploaded , the only difference I see is the hose is a little longer on your baler (and your baler got cleaned up better than mine last fall lol )
