FH Prong Straightening

One prong arm of my C-1 FH Carry-all is bent. Using a straight edge it appears to be out by about 1/2". It would probably work but probably also would be a constant PITA engaging/un-engaging.

With a whole lot of heat and some pressure I'm sure it could be straightened. My question is would this appreciably weaken it so it might be more prone to getting bent again, or even breaking?

Thanks in advance for sage advice.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Unless it's cast, it's probably just a mild steel. Possibly forged steel. In either case, not much to worry about.

If possible, I'd probably try to just disassemble and put it in a press first.

It is disassembled as I'm rebuilding it. You're saying to first try to bend it back in a press cold before adding heat? The point on the prong that needs to be bent is just before (towards the point end) the stop tab. The prong begins its taper there and in cross-section is probably about 1" W x 2 1/4" D.

Take it to a local welding/machine shop. They probably will have a one hundred ton (or bigger) press. They can straighten for $20.00. BTDT

Tilla; I'm like Don-wi. No more than it needs straightening, I'd put it in a press sans heat and straighten it out that way. Once the prong is in the socket, there isn't any side way stress on it. In that regard a little heat probably wouldn't hurt it, but not more than a dull red. W30 Lee

I broke one on a semi mounted plow in about 1972. One latch snapped in and the other did not. I dropped the plow in the ground and it snapped and the other one just pulled out. I was guessing it was cast iron.

No, it is steel.

You was talking about straightening it cold steel. In my little old town we had an old blacksmith,it was about 70 years ago.He told me son trying to bend cold steel will send you to hell.I didn't question him, He had been a blacksmith since the late 1800s.
