Anyone have experience with a Woods 315 mower?

There are several versions of a Woods 315 batwing. All are old, some are very old. I'm not a fan of Woods gearbox design using the blade bar to set the downshaft bearing preload. But you will find many guys that love them.

still runnning one yet today,i always use cornhead gear lube in the gear boxes instead of 80 90 if you have any small leaks.

Cornhead Lube? That must be a very thick gear oil?

This mower has a U joint type coupling on each side at the rear that controls the outer wheel lift. One has been replaced with a home built yoke and cross. Is this U joint setup a weak link?

Have had a 315-2 and a 315-4. Both were good mowers. The -2 could be converted to 1000 rpm just by changing the yoke at the tractor on the pto shaft. Used it this way for light trimming on the sides of the driveway, the field roads and waterways. It looked like lawn. The -4 was a 540 mower,it was used for chopping stalks, pasture mowing, and field mowing. It held up well when used for what it was designed for.It is a medium duty mower. It's not going to hold up if you try to mow heavy brush, small trees and saplings. I ran corn head grease in the gear boxes of both mowers, when the seals began to seep until I could get around to repairing them properly. They are good mowers if they have been taken care of.Clean the decks off when not being used,so the clippings and chaff don't rust the deck through.

it is, it comes in a grease gun tube and you pump it in,pumps in real easy. i use it in all my gearboxes if i have a small leak issue or if the unit is a seasonal use item. local racetrack has a old 15ft rotary harrow they
used for track prep and it had leaking gearbox issues, stuck some this in it and its doing fine. on the batwing take out the plug and pump some in but do not stick gun nozzle down the hole cause the air needs to escape and you can blow seals. it is to be put in cornhead gearboxes. grease fitting on bottom and take out plug on top side them you pump in from fitting on bottom in that case. as far as yoke you mention on rear i have not had any issues with my unit period, other than flats once while. put new blades on unit last year. now it just mow 160 acres year. some guys can tear anything up.
