3 pt mounted disc mowers

For those of you that use 3 pt hitch mounted disc mowers, think Kuhn GMD 600 or 700 or 800 models for example...about 7 to 9ft cut......do you need any counterweight on your left rear wheel to offset the weight of the mower?

If you are talking DRUM mowers, I have a unit like the CCM 190. Run it on a MF 180. Have no problems. When in operation the unit is sliding on the ground. Only time it is carried by the tractor is when in transport. Kind of clumsy when carried in operating position. Rarely transport out behind, but have a full rack of weights. Some tractors might get a little nose light.

I believe those are all disc mowers. The Kuhn is a heavy mower, but most 65-70 hp tractors are heavy enough to counterbalance the mower. If tractor has a loader it has enough weight, in most models of tractors that have that much hp. One issue is if you try to make a fast left turn with the cutter bar all the way up in transport position. Operating a disc mower with a marginal weight tractor requires paying attention and not going too fast. A 7 foot 11 inch disc mower usually does not cause problems, 9 foot ones are more problematic. I think there are longer disc mowers but have no experience with them.

Loaded tires cause a lot of problems mentioned to go away.

Probably depend on your tractor and the hills you have.

I got a 7' 10 foot NH disc mower, put it on my ford 5200 for last cutting. Sure is nice. I was surprised how light the front end is, got 3 weights on the front think I need them!

Really didnt do any hills at all (road ditch), will see next year. It felt quite stable side to side on the level, but the 5200 is a pretty heavy tractor, wheels are set to just fit down both 30 and 38 inch rows so its not real skinny.

I run this, 42 PTO HP and 5 disc mower. No stability issues, but rear tires are loaded and loader mounts present.

One dealer insisted this tractor could not handle a disc mower at all. (too light)

Yes I have to use the brakes if the front wheels slide on cut hay, and you have to be more careful on the road as the weight transfer off the front is way worse with the bar folded and mower raised.

Interestingly... the left rear is not where you need the weigh. Front is where you need weight. I've run my 9' Kuhn on a Ford 5000 with no front weight.... but I also recognize that I'm not climbing a steep hill with that thing folded up. If it's on the ground it's not a big deal usually but you still need to be careful. I've also got a rather unusual tolerance for driving with the front end in the air and steering on the brakes... so I'm not really bothered by a lack of weight. Really, that tractor should have half a rack of weight on it to be safe on the hills we have here...
We also have both rears loaded on that thing. I don't think I would want to run that one with dry tires. Then it would be light..
Now if you're using a 80-90 hp tractor you should be OK for weight regardless.

I have a vicinity cm 2400 with a 7'10" cut, we us a John Deere 2155 with loader or the JD 2520. Both are light in the front and at times I have to us the brakes to steer, but I mow on mostly flat land. The disc mowers can really wreak havoc on your 3 pt if it isn't built heavy enough. We broke the the sway block on the 2155 this year and it is fairly heavy for a 45 hp tractor.

I run a DM1362 Massey mower on my 2705 Massey, that mower is heavy, 11.6' cut and 1800 pounds, but the 2705 is made heavy itself and handles it fine, only problems is running on steep grades the left tire doesn't have much traction! The DM1361 is available with a conditioner and it will weigh in at 2500 pounds.

Drum mower is a little different design, driven from above.

A disc mower is driven from a shaft or gears on the cutter bar below the spinning disks.

They cut about the same, just driven differently.

I have a 485CIH just like the 495 pictured below by 495man.I also mow with 7'10" Fella disc mower. My fields are not flat at all.I was worried at first if it would handle the mower, but it is fine.I am cautious though, and my front tires are loaded.I mow in 4 low.Mark

I am in High 1st most of the time, but running narrower mower. Run 4 low when ground is rough or hay is really thick and tall.
