Just purchased a wooden beam John Deere walking plow. It is unrestored, but in very good condition and I would like to learn more about it. It has ?Deere Prarie Breaker? on the left side and ?John Deere? on the right side handle. When were these made and are there any resources I can find to learn more. I spelled Prairie as it is on the plow.

The 1942 John Deere Plow Works Catalog shows a 14" wood beam Prarie breaker plow built in 1911, there is a parts list but no other information. The picture shows a long moldboard behind a coulter with a gauge wheel in front.

Wonder if this was designed to cut sod, which in turn was used to build sod houses in/on the treeless prairies? Saw a couple of sod cutting plows at the Lester Larsen tractor museum at the U. of Nebraska a couple of years ago. kelly

interesting observation. Looks like the plow would work well for that although I suspect this one was made much later. Sod houses were used in the prairie areas of Minnesota. My ancestors made one and lived in it when they first arrived in the US. I know they had oxen because they brought them in the sod house during the coldest winter days. Had to be a tough life.

I see part of my response didn't get included?? a plow for cutting sod for sod houses is a possibility. My Ancestors did live in a sod house in the prairie area of central Minnesota and they purchased a team of Oxen as soon as they arrived in Minnesota. They kept a diary and noted that on the coldest days they brought the oxen in the sod house to keep them from freezing. Had to be tough life, but I guess the oxen were important

They were used for breaking sod only which is why the moldboard is long and narrow to lay the sod over. I have a few in my collection.
