international 800 plate planter

Anyone use a international 800 plate planter? Need to up grade to a heavier planter on a budget from a old international 56! I dont mind fixing up but need something heavier to fix up

If you plant corn, seems they don't grade seed as well as they used to. It gets hard to use a plate planter for high yield corn.

A JD 7000 finger unit or a 800 or newer cyclo planter or the Kinze 2600 (7000 clone) or a white 5100 can do so much better, if you have any acreage of corn to do at all.

As well with the high cost of bean seed these days, any of those planters fitted with a way of carefully metering soybean seeds into the ground will save quite a bit of seed over the years, you might pay for the 'more expensive' planter in just a few short years and be making more for many years to come.

(In my neighborhood IHC and Case were well liked brands, but no one liked the cyclo, planters until they got to the 1200 series. The 400-900 series just were not liked, I don't even know why, anyone who got one got rid of it in a couple years. Everything was White or JD planters around here, until the 1200 Case. Now you see more red planters than Green again. So myself, I would take the local bias and stay away from an 800 plate or cyclo..... But I'm not even sure why.)

Just my opinion. If you are going to move up, might as well really move up to something better than what you have. Locally, the 800 would not pass muster......

If you get by ok with plates and your seed quality in regard to how well it's graded an 800 would be a big step up from a 56, IH never had a good row unit or depth control because of the lack of parralel linkage until the 800's came out (though the 450 planters did have it), I often wondered if a Kinze style finger pickup could be adapted to a plate 800 planter

I personally am a cyclo fan. My dad bought a new 900 12 row with a Kelderman front fold about 90 or 91. We are still using that same planter today. It will plant anything from sweet corn seed to marbles with the same drum. Whatever population you set it for, it will plant it no matter what speed you run, from 2 mph to 8 mph the drum plants the same population. The finger pickup planters could never do that and I don't think the plate can either. The leading edge coulter design, in my opinion, does a lot better job of getting positive seed to soil contact than other brands without adding extra parts. However if you want a "picket fence" stand, than a cyclo is not for you. But in its defense, I can grow just as good a corn as my neighbors. We harvested the best corn this year we have ever grown, made 243 bushel per acre dry. I hate to admit it but those planters are getting pretty inexpensive now but parts are readily available, all sorts of row configurations are available and much more plentiful than the 8oo plate planter. Good luck in your decision.

Used an 800 for about 10 years I upgraded it to a no-til planter with a frame mounted single coulter. Used the insecticide boxes to apply about 25 lb/ac fert in furrow. Good heavy planter; I made a bracket to attach the tongue to the main frame for extra stability. A well adjusted plate planter driven the proper speed will do as good a job as any plateless; speed is your only limitation. Had Early Riser units which also were consistent in no til conditions. The only reason I traded, was to get a split row planter to plant 15 inch soys as well as 30 inch corn.
