model j harrow repaint

I just bought an old model j flexo hitch harrow that I'm gonna paint. There is no paint left on it. It's rusty, but not scaly. The steel angle is pitted some. I know it could stand a good sandblasting, but I know of no local blasters around anymore. My question is.. would it be a bad mistake to pressure wash the harrow real good with purple degreaser and paint it with oil based enamel without getting it sandblasted?

I pressure washed our Pittsburgh 3 pt spring tooth harrow; set it up on 12x12 blocking. Then gave my neighbors' 8 and 10 year old boys a couple of quarts of rust preventive paint (1 red, 1 black), a couple of inexpensive brushes, mechanics gloves and all the choclate milk and oatmeal raisin cookies they could eat.

I less than a day I had a beautiful looking harrow and a couple of painted "indian boys" . Wonder why my neighbors wife hasn't talked to me much since then. :?

LOL, I bet she didn't have much to say. Gonna look for some good rusty metal primer. I painted my Dearborn plow the other day with a brush. It turned out pretty good. It wasn't rusty, but the paint was orange. The new paint looks orange under the florescent lights ,but is actually more of a red.
