bale elevators

Is there a difference in the strength of the round tube types vs the square tube ones? Am working on making up some working units out of misc parts I have acquired over the years. Have used a round tube 40' on a transport for many years. Had some nice square tube sections, made another 40' and put it on a transport carriage. Worked out well except it seems much more floppy and wiggles a lot when it's moved. It seems like I read somewhere that round tube was stronger than square or was it square tube was stronger than round. Can't remember which. Thanks

I theory round is stronger then square given the tube side walls are the same thickness. But if the square is say 1/8inch and the round is 1/126 inch the square would be stronger

Weigh a section of each! My guess is that the round is prolly thicker wall, and will be heavier as well as more rigid. I bought about 80 feet of used JD model 200 (round tube) with 2 sets of ends. I made 2 transport elevators, a long & a short! They are rugged! Only thing that has damaged them is a tree falling on them. A BFH fixed the short one, and I haven't tackled the long one yet!

The round tube seems to be stronger. Im not sure if its to do with better angled bracing or what. Like Shetland said my JD 200 is quite rigid I have another JD that is not built with that style bracing and its no where near as rigid.
