RECENTLY PURCHASED A IH 8309 Discbine Looking for Input.

We recently purcahsed a IH 8309 Discbine. I am waiting for an owners manual to arrive but was wanting to know if there are experts out there that are willing to share information not covered in the manual? I also wanted to know how to get it off the road blocks? Hoping to cut hay before the manual arrives.

The 8309 was originally designed/sold by New Idea as a 5209.
When Hesston bought NI I believe they renamed it a 3209.
Hesston then merged with AGCO. I buy parts for my NI 5209
from a Case/Ih dealer. If the manual you ordered is like my NI
5209 operators manual you should be in good shape as the
manual is excellent. However, you may want to consider
purchasing a service manual if you plan on doing any heavy
maintenance work. Late model xx09 have greasable pods. Earlier
models require you to disassemble the pods to add EPO
grease..every 500 acres of use...quite a pain. If you are buying
used, make sure you check the pods for adequate grease..one
way or the other. Nice machine, pulls/powers easy ..you don't
need gobs of HP to run it like a Deere 9' unit.

Actually, the CaseIH 8309 is the same as a Hesston 1320; it does not have New Idea lineage. It is a robust design and uses the same cutterbar components as Hesston's self-propelled units of the day. This is the Comer-built spur gear cutterbar, not the bevel gear design used in the NI's.

I'm sure the manual mentions it but it is worth
emphasizing - don't overfill the cutterbar with oil!
That little 6-spindle bar doesn't take much oil and
getting too much in there will burn it up quick.
This was so critical that new machines were shipped
from the factory with a marked plastic jug to make
it easier for the customer to measure out the right
amount.

oops..I was thinking of the 3309 Case/IH. The New Idea unit first introduced in 1988 still lives on today (with some improvements) as the Hesston 1359. Sorry for the misinformation...I should be more careful.
