John Deere 2 Bottom Plow and Sickle Bar Mower ID

Hi guys,

Made a deal for a tractor recently and some JD implements were included with the deal. Today I brought home one of the implements which is some sort of JD Two Bottom Plow. It has no markings on it that I can see other than the JD Green and yellow paint in a few spots, and it has two rubber spoke tires and one solid metal one in the back. I would like to be able to repair this plow to working order to use but am unsure how it works and it does need a new rim. One of the tires appears to have some sort of gearbox on it with a lever and the hitch is some weird shape so I don't really know how it attaches.

I will also be bringing home a JD Sickle Bar Mower later this week which appears to be a semi mount? It has one tire, a hydraulic cylinder, and a place where it appears to attach to the tractor but am not entirely sure how it works.

The tractor that I am getting that these implements go with is a John Deere B and both these implements are supposed to fit this tractor. I am hoping to be able to use both of these once I figure out how they work and what they are exactly.

If i did this properly, there should be pictures of both implements below. I will try to get better pictures of the plow, specifically the hitch, as it was dark by the time we got home with it.

Thanks in advance,

The mower is a good 'old #5 mower. Made in the 30s/40s. There were millions of them out there, Still a heck of a good mower. With the right 'mounts',it could be easily put on any tractor.

Thank you! Do you happen to know where I could get any more information on them such as how to mount them and set them up?

You can still get the JD 44 Plow Operator's Manual (OMA1352) from JD Publications for $30. I got manuals for my JD 55, 66, and F620 plows from them a couple of years ago. You could also search the "for sale" ads for used manuals that are offered for sale from time to time. Al

There's lots of info available for FREE by looking up the parts catalogs at www.jdparts.com. The #5 parts catalog, especially, contains lots of specific tractor mounting info.

Beyond that, I'd first look for original OM's on ebay before buying new from DEERE or paying for hazy secondhand copies from the other outfit that has been mentioned.

Go 6 posts earlier than yours for information on that hitch rediron I believe is poster.

That plow was made in 3 different frame sizes and each are adjustable for two different width bottoms. Small frame for 10" & 12" bottoms and measures out like it woild be an 11" plow and scarce. Medium frame for 12" & 14" bottoms and measures like it wouild be a 13" plow, Large frame for 14" & 16" bottoms and measures like it would be a 15" plow. GETTING IT WITH THE TRACTOR YOU MIGHT BE LUCKY ENOUGH TO STILL HAVE THAT KNEE KNOCKER PARTS STILL ON THE TRACTOR, IF NOT FORGET ABOUT FINDING ANY. Don't know how it went to all capitals there, not intended. Probably hit caps lock instead of shift. Best even if you do have all the knee knocker parts to switch it over to the type of hitch for Farmall, Massey, Moline, Oliver and be safe and still have your knee cap. It is also a clutch lift that works by pulling a rope to lift or drop, does not use tractor hydrolicks. The mower there should be a pair of brackets at the tractor hitch that they bolt to. But that mower does require the hydrolicks on the tractor and PTO has to be running to work so you have to lift mower with bar in flat position then when lifted to max height lift cutter bar to vertical. Trying to do it different will break everything up.

Thank you for all the information, I greatly appreciate the help. Just have a few questions that I will try to keep to a minimum. My apologies in advance, up until now I have not really worked with implements and how they work so I am still figuring things out.

Where do I measure from to determine the frame size and where do I measure from to determine the bottom size?

I think that I figured out how the hitch goes on and was able to hook it up to my Farmall H with another clevis to move it around and it looked right but I may be wrong. I attached a picture of how the hitch on the plow looks now that I think I have it set up properly.

On the plow, the side with the clutch did drop so the weight was off the tire when I pulled the lever attached to the clutch and I can't get it to come back up on the tire, but from what I can see it is normal and when I pull it forward from what I understand it will come back up?

Also, which knee knocker parts are you talking about? I do believe I have all the parts but I do have a few smaller parts that were sitting on the windowsill and I was told they go with the tractor and implements. I do think I saw a set of brackets which may be what you are talking about.

I should be picking up the sickle bar mower tomorrow so I may have a better idea what the parts are for then. Won't be able to figure things out for sure until next weekend since we can't get the tractor until then.

One last question. Does anyone know where I can find a new rim for this or what the specifications/sizes are and are both rims the same? The right rim is rusted out and I can't get any info off the tires. I haven't been able to find anything on craigslist and don't know what other rims would be the same and would fit. I did post some more pictures now that its off the trailer. Also included a picture of the clutch to try and show hot the piece at the end moved so the tire won't go down.

Thank you for all the help and advice,

Thank you. I did look at that and spend some time working on it this afternoon and getting everything loosened up and moving and was able to figure out the hitch (I think). I did post a picture of how I got it set up above which from what I have seen and was able to figure out is correct.

Thank you for the help,

Thank you! I was able to find the parts catalogs for both the implements and figured out how they work for the most part. Will be looking through them in more detail once I get the tractor to see how the mower mounts as I think that's what the extra parts I have are for.

As previously mentioned below by [b:654c4848f0]Bob[/b:654c4848f0], [b:654c4848f0]Mark-IA[/b:654c4848f0], and [b:654c4848f0]DeltaRed[/b:654c4848f0], you have a No. 5 Power Mower.

These mowers were made from 1934 through 1956.

The photo of your mower shows that it has a drawbar on mower to attach to your Model B tractor.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the drawbar on mower (Key 1).

Take a look at the photo below.

As mentioned below by [b:654c4848f0]Leroy[/b:654c4848f0], "[i:654c4848f0]The mower there should be a pair of brackets at the tractor hitch that they bolt to.[/i:654c4848f0]"

Take a look at the diagram below

a206705.jpg" width="650"

Note the left hand drawbar angle (Key 2) and the right hand drawbar angle (Key 4).

Take a look at the photo below.

a206706.jpg" width="650"

These drawbar angles will be necessary on your Model B to attach the drawbar on mower on your No. 5 mower.

Take a look at the photo below of the drawbar angles attached to the drawbar.

Hope this helps.

Leroy: they made some model 5 mowers before that I used to have a John Deere promotional picture of one on an unstyled model B.

Seeing a better picture that is not the knee knocker hitch, that one has parts that fasten directly on the clutch lever to throw it out of gear instead of unhooking if you hit something. The one you have I have seen but never was able to figure out how they worked. For measuring size measure from same spot (can be center, left or right side) on each beam and you will come up with either 11", 13" or 15". Yours will probably measure 13" or 15" and the version measuring 11" was not produced in all years and is not listed in some orignal operators manuals. Then for as how it is set for bottom cutting width the vertical part of both beams have an offset in them and for the narrow cut that is turned in on both, for wide cut it is turned out. As for bottom size that is harder, they used a lot of different bottoms. Some versions used the same parts for all 4 sizes except share, others used different moldboards for different sizes. So only way to know what bottom and size is to take them apart to get the part numbers off the moldboards, some you might be able to read number without taking apart but others not. Then find a plow bottom parts book, should still be avaible from Deere on there parts lookup site, I don't curently have the book numbers avaible. For the hitch and clutch go to same site and look for No 44 plow.

The first mowers were the No. 5 but they did not carry a model number but were simply called tractor mower as to differenciate between them and the horse mower that was built at the same time. It was only later they started using the No. 5 number As it was the next number avaible in the mower line after the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and the Big 4 horse mowers. There was a mower for the GP tractors only and as far as I know was simply called a GP mower after the GP was no longer made and the tractor mower came out that was later called a No. 5 and that was when the side mount mower for the L tractor was introduced.

On the #44, check out Tyler (he's a member on here), I bet he has everything you need to get it back up and going.

I have a #44 as well. I put "new" NU style bottoms on it so all the wear parts are now easily found and replaced.
