Flair box question

I purchased a running gear with a wooden flair box. I thought the end gate would be the lift style. Looking at what is left of the end gate it looks like two piece opposed swinging end gates. Does anyone have something like this that they could post pictures?

Thanks for your help

Is this bottom board about 12 inches tall??? A common door around here was made out of on long board and two shorter boards and a hinge. You have the two shorter boards that are the width of the wagon. They usually fit into a slot on each end. They are hinged on the middle. The longer board is bolted to one of the short boards. Then it has a removable bolt/handle that holds it to the other short board. So you have the two short boards to where they hold when straight. The long boards holds them straight until it is unfastened and then you hinge the board out and they will remove from the wagon.

This is not a flare box, but it has the kind of tailgate that JDSeller is referring to. On the left vertical stake there is a metal latch. When that is turned, the horizontal board can be pulled toward you. It is connected to the right half of the tailgate. The two halves are hinged together and fold like an accordion, allowing the tailgate to be removed. Hope that made sense.

John You have the door like I tried to explain and Rich got you a picture of. The metal handle is actually the latch for the cross board. Your two boards would be hinged in the middle. The long thin board was hooked to one half of the door. When it was closed the metal handle was down over the cross board. To open it you would turn the handle to allow the long cross board to pull out towards you. That makes the two hinged boards fold.

I actually found some pictures of a patent on a folding end gate. It was in 1870. LOL

Top picture closed and the bottom opened.

Thanks for the replies JD Seller and Rich's Toys I am starting to see how it should work. My doors are equal length but it would still work the same. When I open he doors will the whole end gate come out of the wagon?

John

The end gate is just held in a "track/slot" on each side. You will get the entire thing out when you open it. The top half is usually fastened solid.
