hey tx jim thought i'd post again I posted some pics need your opinion an by the way the one way is 8 inches instead of ten

We all work dirt, plant seed, control weeds, harvest a crop hopefully.

Its interesting how different the methods are from region to region, for the local conditions.

Never see a rig like that around here, rocks and heavy clay, just nothing like that around here. Neat pics in the thread below.

Ya paul region to region is completely different I used to run a one way when i was a kid what kind of equipment do you run I bought that one way for 35 dollars

Used to be when I was a kid nearly everything was plowed with a moldboard plow in fall.

Winter mellows the ground out, we can get frost 4 feet or more deep, and lots of spring snow melt.

Spring you would harrow (drag) it, then disk it.

Wait for the weeds to sprout, then disk it.

Harrow it right before planting, killed some sprouting weeds.

Today we do some sort of chisel plowing (an aggressive version, ripper, disc chisel, coulter chisel with twisted shanks) in fall, our wet heavy clayish soils and very short growing season means we want warm and dry soils as quick as we can in spring to get in the fields. This year I saw more moldboard plowing than I have in a couple decades, lot of fellas brought the plows back out.

In spring we try to hit the field once with a good field cultivator with a several bar harrow or roller on the back, and follow with a planter. We found out a disk will pack and were I this clayish soil, where a field cultivator lifts it and helps dry it out, won't pack as bad.

It is not uncommon the past 10 years to have a few pockets of frost 18-24 inches deep in the ground yet while we are planting corn - if we get a dryer spring now and then so we can get out there.

Paul thanks for the information I enjoyed reading it it is raining here maybe get 3 inches we do not have our corn out yet might be awhile before we get in the field roads not to good

Relative keeps track, says we have nearly 7 inches of rain in the past 25 days. Puddles of water sitting everywhere.

Fortunately we had a long dry no rain period before that, and nearly everyone got done here. Talking below freezing tonight after more waves of rain this afternoon, and maybe some snow on Friday.
