Cultivators for Model A

Just wondering if anyone knows of a source for cultivators for a '47 model A. I have a truck garden and recently purchased the A for cultivating row crops, but am having some difficulty finding the cultivator kit. I'm specifically looking for what I call the "belly" cultivators that would be mounted just about where my feet rest on the operator platform. Any ideas? Thanks!

Well there are a number of Modal A tractors. JD made them as did Farmall and A/C so we need to know what brand you have since ones that fit a JD-A will not fit a Farmall A

The shanks, points, and side dresser are available at www.agrisupply.com. Do not know if they have more than that though.

You might want to give this guy a call, he has more Farmall cultivator stuff than anybody around this part of NC. There were alot of row crop Farmalls around this part of the south was tobacco country. He did have some Farmall A on the salvage yard last time I stopped in.

Your 47 Farmall A would have hand lifts since hydraulics were not introduced till the SUPER A model. Some cultivator parts can be harder to find since they are pre-hydraulic cultivators, some parts will interchange just find with the Super A and later row crop Farmall tractors.

Your other choice is checkout Craiglist or visit some local farm auction in your area. You could luck up if you are in row crop country.

hope this helps

Thanks! I was trying to locate them..came across their website once before but forgot the name. I also appreciate the tip about scouting around tobacco country.

Hello, So where are you located? Are you looking for the one row model? Hand lift or
has someone put a live hydralic pump on it.....or call me at 320-468-6474

Yeh, I forgot about the lift all (exhaust lift) for the Farmall A. Over the years I have seen quite a few hand lifts and several Farmall A's converted to a make shift hydraulic lift. Some of the hydraulic lift conversions were nicely done and some cobbled up messes. The picture below is the only one I've see in person ( borrowed pic from his site...). They must have all been a real source of problems as they got older.

In browsing the internet I had in fact seen the exhaust lifts and a couple of home made hydraulic lifts. Your photo looks familiar.. a lot of the cultivator kits I have seen are in rough shape. I'm trying to keep my set up manual, so it will be more according to the actual Farmall A Cultivision series. I think the hydraulic lifts and such were more for the Super A anyway. Thanks for posting the photo!

Kevin, I'm in Northeast Connecticut. You raise a qood question regarding the number of rows. I normally set my rows about 24" apart, depending on the crop. A single row cultivator could work. We are only cultivating about an acre to an acre and a half at most. I'm open to suggestions too!

OFF, you will prolly need to straddle 2 rows, if you stay at 24" row spacing. Ideally, your tread width would be a multiple of your row width. You might want to measure your tread width, and let that determine your row width. Best way to measure would be center line to center line of your rear tires. A couple inches one way or the other may not be critical. Given that you will most likely be straddling 2 rows you might as well set the cultivators up to do 2 rows. The only time this will not be good is when your row spacing varies, as the row spacing of the cultivators will always remain constant, as set!

You are probably correct in going with the hand lifts for the cultivator setup. Simple is usually the best route. Especially in searching for older farm equipment items.

Hydraulics did not become available on the Farmall row crop tractors till the debut of the SUPER A somewhere around very late 1940's.

If you find a Farmall A (around these parts a Farmall A is sometime referred to as a "FARMALL STRAIGHT A) and it has hydraulics it did not come from the factory that way. It was either added on or their was parts swapped out with a Super A or later model Farmalls to give it hydraulic lift ability.

Also if the one place I forgot to mention in searching for what you need is eBay. Try searching on "farmall A front cultivator"
and your search should give you a good idea of what you need.

Hope this helps

ask on the farmall board. mr gene bender can anser any questions you may have. I bought a cultivator from him and he is a expert on small farmall equipment. Bob

I have a Super A and the guy I bought it from had added a 2" square tube 5' long so that it
would use the tool holders from Buckeye Equipment and 1 1/4" round tool shanks. Belly mount

sorry this isn't very clear. But...

I live on the side of a mountain and use tractor and 5' rototiller. to prevent erosion
I leave strips of grass. and all my tractors have 5' between rear wheel. I plant either
1 row or 2 rows within bed. I have 5 cultivating shanks on the 2" tool bar. 1 at each end,
they don't come off, 1 in the center for 2 rows (and 2 more out side)

Behind the tractor I mounted a ATV sprayer, a toggle switch on the dash, with 3 nozzles,
one set for the center of the row and 2 for 2 rows and they have ball valves to shut them
off if i choose

I watch craigslist daily.

I have Fords--8N, 3000, 4000. A Case 311, and 2 Farmall Super A.

I use Growers Mineral Solutions and highly recommend it.
