I have just pulled my wife's great grandparents mower out of the trees to restore. Most everything seems to be there. Does anyone know anything about these or where I can find help on getting parts? Thanks for any help that you may be able to offer.

You shouldn't have much trouble finding parts, but if you do, I know a couple amish junk yards in Ohio that have piles of those old mowers.
I'd be very surprised if they didn't have any part you need.

It can be slow going dealing with them though - usually done through the mail. So - consider me a backup. Try ebay and the internet first
- if you do get stuck on something, let me know, I'll dig up their contact info.

I also go out to visit them two or three times a year too with my own list of parts to find, it'd be easy to add a few parts to that list
for you.

I put my email address on this so you can send me a private email if you'd like.

You have one of the best horse-drawn mowers ever made. Just NEVER pull it behind a tractor because you'll inevitably go a bit too fast and the gears will crystalize and your grandparent's mower will be yard art only. Usually ebay has original or reproduction manuals. Also Lynn Miller wrote a book "Horse Drawn Mower Book which features the IHC #9 and the John Deere Big 4. That book show and tell all about repairing the #9. Good luck. kelly

I have some questions for you . On the tool box lid what's it say ? High gear, trailer or regular ? How long of a bar dose it have ? What kind of wheels , cast centers with rubbet or steel , if steel how wide of tread are they ? I have an Amish buddy that rebuild #7,#9's and big 4's .I seen a #9 on rubber with trailer gear and 7' bar sell for over $1200 . Mark

I have a 25V junk tractor mower and wonder if the bar will fit a #9 Maybe a collector or horse person could use it. Years ago I saw pretty good 27's sell for $25

I have a #9 and used to have a 25 v. The cutterbars will interchange, once the 25v would clog up cutting bermuda grass with a non live power tractor(JD A). I took the short cutterbar off the #9 and put it on the 25v in place of the 7 foot 25v bar. It cut the grass. I don't think the #9 would operate the 7 foot bar. Maybe on ripe small grain but not hay.

No. 9 regular gear steel with 6' bar priced about $1,500 without being painted, normal price from my Amish friend that deals in them. Same thing for the No. 7 or Deere big 4. 6' bars are prefered and he will shorten a 7' bar to get that 6' or take 2 5' bars and put together to make a 6' bar. I just took a No. 7 over to him that I found locally, he is 55 mile away. It is a 6' bar but completely frose up in drive line. Have found others for him as well.

I rebuilt a No. 9 a couple of years ago and put the 7' bar on it, ( they were avaible from factory with 5', 6' or 7' bars) The Amish machinery dealer I sold it to was using it this fall when I was there and asked him how that 7' bar was working and he said fine. Most prefer a 6' tho.

I have the parts books and a operators manual for that mower if you need any information out of them. Ther cover all the McCormick mowers, New 4, Ne4 Big 4, No. 6, Big 6, No 7 and the No. 9 that was the last horse drawn mower McCormick built. And all cutter bar parts from any of them up through the last of the pitman pull or rear mount types fit (do not know about side mount, may be different knife head drive, don't know). The guards for the pitmanless would also work. Now if you want guards I have quite a few of the orignal non rock style guards that are good but would be just for correctness for show. Were replaced with rock style for work.
