Unicorn wood splitters are about as safe as lawn darts.
Do the country a favour and reduce health care expenditures. Scrap that screw type log splitter.

The only 2 of those I ever saw were owned by people who in effect SHOULD be allowed to have them. The gene pool needs cleansed every so often.

I have a BarkBuster brand.

Handling cattle is more dangerous.

The chainsaw isn't exactly a safe item....

I see almost every farm with pto shields removed, auger grating removed, etc.

I see a lot of kids like doing really wild stuff with roller blades, skate boards, bicycles, .....

None of this makes the screw splitter any safer, but then again, in perspective, it is not the worst thing I've seen.

Biggest danger is if the wood slips off the support and starts spinning around & around, knocking your hand a real whack....

I had one that I put on an International 2400 tractor. I drilled each fender and installed eye bolts. I ran a rope from the PTO level thru one eye bolt and tied the rope to the other eye bolt so in case of emergency, I could grab the rope and shut it off quickly. I used it a year but I put a small piece of wood on it and it slipped off the bar and it hit my arm so it was gone that day. Good luck.

A friend of mine almost lost his leg AND his life to one of those screw type wood splitters. Do yourself a favour and get rid of the darn thing.

Here's a shot of the unicorn I have laying out in the barn. I've never used it just keep it for back up in case my 30
ton hyd one goes down.

Looks dangerous, but guess it's no more dangerous than my hydraulic wood splitter.

I have had my cap fall off and get cut into, reminder just what would happen to your hand or fingers if in the wrong place.

Must remember this is one dangerous machine.

Wonder what it would look like if it were in a manufacturing plant, would have seventeen different guards and take 5 mins. To load.

Sure are nice fast splitters, I have a Barq something or other. Haven't used it in a few years. Livestock are the most dangerous things in deal with, these screw deals you have to keep your mind in the game, but they work fast enough you can, don't get bored waiting for hydraulics to return....

A Friend used to sell them. For years he would have one on a rear wheel of his pick-up at the county fair demonstrating it. He always said that he sold a lot of them.

that's the kind I have. Front roller finally tore up. Tired 3 times to fix it but finally gave up. Sits in the shed now. Prolly never fix it up.

Posts about screw type wood splitters and buzzsaws invariably result in condemnation from people who've never actually used one, but offer an opinion based on visual perception and bar stool anecdotes. Truth is, like anything else they are as safe as the user.

I have a new end around here somewhere I bought back years ago when I was using a 3pt one.
I'm not usually scared by equipment but that was one piece I was glad to retire.

A friend's dad used one growing up. It was very
large and he bolted it on the rearend of an old 350
Ford pickup. He would put the pickup in four wheel
drive and back the back axle up on a log so that
wheel was in the air. Then he would put it in gear
and take it out of four wheel drive. He'd split wood
all day and then put it in 4x4 to pull off the log.
Worked slick. I'll bet the big side was close to a foot
across. He had a long bar to wedge the wood if it
wanted to spin.

Funny how many are still around. I haven't used this one in years. I did use it to split 5 foot wood on the farm when we had the Longwood furnace in the basement.
