i saw an ad for a unicorn screw type wood-fence post splitter 3pt $100. are these any good,,price?
thanks.......

They are dangerous. No longer made - they do still sell one type tho.

They also split wood pretty good and very fast. Can get a lot done in a day.

Longer wood is better - short pieces will slip off & spin around - whack the heck out of your hand or arm. Not good.

The spinning point is about as dangerous as a tractor mounted buzz saw.

You'll get a lot of various opinions here. :)

I agree with Paul. I did elect to keep using one
and be careful-I split alot of wood. Price seems
reasonable. Chuck

I used one for years, still have it and would not try to sell it to anyone; I will scrap it before I sell it. I use a 3 point mounted hydraulic splitter now. They can be very dangerous due to the high speed spinning screw. Short pieces can slip and whack you; finger pinching is easier; the screw tip gets very hot after a while; for tough, stringy pine, the screw sometimes splits it only partlially and then the pine is pulled in past the widest part of the screw and snaps back together around the screw shaft; you then have to stop the machinery and cut the piece of pine off. There is no dead man safety switch, my hydralic splitter has one and is much safer. I would not recommend it to anyone.

They are an excellent companion piece to a buzz saw...if the saw doesn"t kill you, you can get screwed to death by the splitter. Both are covered under Rube Goldberg patents #1 and #2.

Every time I see a buzz saw, I cringe to think of a child being nearby when one is operated. As for adult fool using one, they need to be removed from the gene pool anyway.

razor,

i think this type splitter is dangerous.

any wood splitter is dangerous, but these things are like standing by a pto shaft with ragged clothes on.

I have a splitter made by the Brave Company, have had it for 23 years, 8hp with 22 tons of force, will split most blocks of wood. It is a horz splitter, but the new vertical splitter have advantages, I have never used one.

If you get a splitter for your tractor, if you have a small tractor it may not have the oil pumping volume to make the splitter cycle fast enough. Check it out before you buy!!

Good luck and be safe,

no wealth like good health!!

I have one, and will like the rest.. scrap it. I have used a buzz saw since the late 60's, and helped around them years before that, and never seen a accident. But that splitter is just plain dangerous. I guess in fact I know of a couple more that are sitting in the trees, but they would never sell them except to a terrorist.

Don't let it cross your mind to buy it even if he gives it to you.

Pretty harsh words from some one who has never used a cord wood saw.I ve used cord wood saws since the mid 50s with no problems.I use a shaft drive saw on my tractor. It is well guarded and can saw wood all day on 2 quarts of gas per hour.I dont know anyone who has been hurt running a cordwood saw but have talked to many people that have cut with a chain saw.Children need to be kept away from power eqipment of any type.I sawed wood with Joe Ribero when he was over 80 on his Model A powered saw.I asked him if he had any injuries from the saw.He said none in 60 years of running them.I sawed 9 cord of wood in October with my saw.Ive run planers and shapers and table saws and saw mills for over 50 years.Dont judge others by your limitations.Life is risky unless you lay abed all day.

Heard of a fellow who backed a tractor pto unicorn splitter into a big spruce tree, to a long time to get the tree down.He hired a bucket truck to get out of that one.Ive used hydraulic splitters and know of 2 people who split their thumbs.A woman got killed by a rented post hole auger a few years ago near here.If I cant split it with a maul I let the tree stand.

the one is 3 point, i used it very well on 8n ford,, the other has a 9 hp briggs, both made by barkbuster company about 1980.

Holy smokes guy! The thread is SEVEN YEARS OLD!
And you are still replying to it just like me! Now that's funny.

In all seriousness, I'm reaching out to anyone that I think might have a tip for these old Unicorn wood splitters to it was worth a shot. Best wood splitter I've ever used. Dangerous yes but beats a hydraulic splitter all day long. Easy on the tractor and crazy fast. I broke my tip and finding a replacement isn't easy though.
