8 row planter hp???

this planter is more planter than i was looking for but it is in great condition. it is a white 5100 8 row front fold. It has markers, Keaton seed firmers, insecticide, trash whippers, vac, monitor and comes with the manual. It does not have fertilizer. my only concern is that it may be to much for my farmall 656. My tractor is in good shape and real healthy. my ground is flat and is a clay loam soil. I was looking for a 4 row narrow and really was not actively looking for one yet but this just popped up near by. Can I pull it? what is your opinion?

I can't answer your question directly, but this guy seems to do OK. Just a picture from the interweb somewhere.

If you are are pulling on flat ground with only the openers in the ground,no problem. If you are notilling, all the 'hardware' in the ground,it may struggle. That said,I pull a 6row with furrowers and duckfeet with a SuperM on flat to gradual slopes. It handles it just fine.My planter is a 3 point mounted,I assume yours is a pull type.

You will want duals on the tractor to prevent compaction, on flat ground without fertilizer, I think you will be fine.

This planter is way bigger than I really need. I will only be covering a few small fields 2 to 8 acres. 20ish acres a year i was gonna wait till i could afford a jd 7000 or similar planter but the good ones seem to go 3-5k and this one is less than that. but it is a nice unit.

My 60hp Ford pulls a 6 row 7000 with granular fertilizer well. Know it back there on a hill, but I'm still throttled back in a higher gear.

I think it would handle an 8 row without fertilizer fine. Might get interesting in a real wet year without duals.

Are you on the road much, a smaller planter is more fun getting field to field. Once there, the bigger one will be a joy. ;)

Takes more effort changing varriaties and corn to beans or the like tho.

I know a guy that is looking for one, sell it to him and buy the four row. Plus put some cash in your pocket.

In laws pulled a JD 7000 8RN with a JD 2130 for years Tractor was rated at 66hp, had 18.4x30 singles.Planter had dry fertilizer, insecticide boxes, land was flat to slight rolling, would plant at 5 mph No Problem

my neighbor pulls this with a 4020. that about 90 hp. its a 7000 10 row up front with a 9 row splitter behind it to no till beans. 19 rows in all. 4020 has no problem with it

in no till my 7710 ford knows my 6100 is back there in tough spots. But that is also at 4.5 mph. If I planted at 3 i dont think it would bother it at all.
