new holland 273 baler pick up seems locked

Was baling up the last of my corn stalks here the other day and all at once my pickup quit. First thing I did was back up and make sure it wasn't hung up still nothing. Jump shear pin is intact turn back on only one chain is running the the one that drives pick up is super tight and the slip clutch on the side is slipping. Everything else is running plunger thrower ect. I cleaned out the entire pickup area and I can't find any obstructions. What would make it lock up this tight can't even wiggle the pick up teeth it's rock solid. Maybe a bearing?anyone ever have a pick up off baler and torn down before? Thank you Josh

My guess is there's a piece that is worn out in the track of the cam that causes the teeth to change angles as pickup rotates. Repair will require dis-assembly of pickup attachment.

The rollers like the rollers and track on
hay bine? I'm thinking right part? So if
one or more of them is shot that could
cause it to bind? Never tore into that
part of the baler before. It's the baler
I grew up with on this farm never had no
real troubles before should add it's a
super sweep

Remove the first 3 guards on the left side facing the baler.Grab a tooth and see how much play you have in the tube..If one is in a bind you'll know it.

Sometime the cam track is worn also.If it is then you'll have to take off a lot of parts. If it's just a follower it can be fixed without a lot of removal. There is a hole in the cam end of the pickup.Line the roller up with it to hold the screw as you loosen the nut.

Good Luck

Could also be the bearing on the shaft that runs across behind the pickup - chain drives the pickup on right side of baler. Had to take wheel, chain guard, chain and sprockets off to get to it. Then there was the bearing removal. Not a fun or easy task. Least that was the problem on my 268, think yours could be similar. Belt drive on left side just slipped, so no other damage. The bearing replacement was enough. Sprocket was pretty stubborn as well.

My NH 269 stopped turning this year on third cutting. Bearings on both ends of the pick-up shaft were shot and allowing it to bind up. Original sized bearings were not available(OD) so had to get bearing retainers with the bearings. Had to cut old bearings off. I slid shaft all the way to the left(looking at it) and installed right bearing then got shaft positioned for left bearing and sprocket before setting the screw on the bearing collar. Mostly glad that neighbor offered to come bale my hay as the repair took a few days. gobble

Nine chances out of ten a pick-up tooth is twisted and jammed in there some where. They are hard to see when that happens. Take your time, find it; probably have to remove the stripper rail to dislodge it...

I have had the retaining pins (Cotter Pins) wear off and let the shaft drift toward the cam and lock the pick-up..

Worth looking at every year..

Ron.

Thanks guys been working on it and today got into enough to find my cam bearings are shot going to replace them in the morning along with some new pick up teeth while it's apart and I'm in there. Thanks again! Josh
