honda recon 4 wheeler question

I have a little around the farm helper: Honda recon 4 wheeler 250 cc

it has the auto shift, currently its locked in 1st gear, will not shift back to neutral.
it runs good, but at this point I cannot get it back to neutral, so it can be started.

I normally back it into the shed, so I can start it in neutral, then shift to 1st gear drive around a bit, then it shifts to reverse fine,

but, sometimes it will not shift from neutral to reverse until its driven some.

does anyone know if I can pull start the 4 wheeler with my tractor????
I believe if I could get it started, drive it a bit, then it would shift properly with the auto shift??

maybe I would be better just taking it in and letting the "man" fix it properly,
but its old and well used like me, he may tell me to just take it out and shoot it and put it out of its misery.

sure do not want to ruin the transmission as I am sure its only a small adjustment on the shift to repair, I hope.
was running good all weekend with the kids driving it.

my son just parked it heading into the shed not backing it in as I do, he was not aware of its early morning shifting quirks as all he saw was it working properly.

thanks for any tips,

My recomendation is to get a service manual. Also go talk to the srevice man/dealer. They may tell you it's a simple 'fix' and how to do it.An independent shop is more likely to help than the dealer. If all else fails, take to the shop. Secondly,I have an old '82 ATC 200(3 wheeler) and an '82 4Trax 200. both are bulletproof old machines.Used regularly(daily durring irrigateing season)The first guy who tells me to "junk" em........Well,you know....Good luck! keep the old machines running.......

Not likely to pull start but one could if your careful rig up a jumper from the battery right to the starter and spin it over and get it to start. Doing it that way would by pass any safety switch so one would need to be very careful doing that

What old said. Rig a jumper wire.'Jump start' right to the starter lug.Be careful.Lock the parking brake,or block up the unit so the drive wheels are off the ground. No runaways!

What kind of shape is the battery in? I have a 2003 Recon with electric shift and when the battery gets weak, it does just as you describe. Maybe the alternator is not strong enough with a weak/and or sulfated battery. Try charging the battery or even jumpers from a good/larger battery, it will probably shift to neutral. Or get out the manual shift handle and get it in neutral.

I made a set of jumper cables from 10 gauge copper and some pretty good smaller size cable clamps.

Also, there is a sensor in the front of the engine that senses what gear it is in. This sensor can go bad and cause the same type of problem. It is a: Angle Sensor Assembly- Part # 38800-HR3-A21. Price is $17-$30 at many places online. Google the Part#.

Hope this helps,
Garry

I charged the battery, it showed full charge

but I will hook up jumper cables from my dodge diesel truck, if its going to work those two batteries should give it enough kick.

thanks for the tip, might work,

otherwise off to the shop.

I don't think that angle sensor is hard to change. My cousin changed the one on his 2004 model, said it was easy to get to.

Look in the tool compartment for the manual shift lever. If none there get one via the internet. Then start electrical troubleshooting.

hooked up the cables to my truck today,
had high hopes that with the extra current it would shift back into neutral

but no go at this time, so tomorrow I will take it to the shop.

maybe it will not be a big job to repair.

Once in a while if it is not put in neutral before turning off engine , I'll have to rock it to shift into neutral to start it. Also mine has a pull cord on back of motor .

I took it to the shop this morning.

Guy checked it out, but could not get it to shift out of first gear, said he would get to it next week.

Hope he can fix it at reasonable cost.
