ih 400 cyclo planter

Yeah, i have to agree, there was just not much quality in the cyclo planter, the disk openers, scraper's, the markers, ah ish !

800 models were better, took until the 1200 models before the cyclo was a good planter.

400 are sold for scrap here, just no value. They were a new idea, and hadn't had the bugs worked out yet.

That is the local view. Actually more Red planters around now than Green ones, since the 1200 and newer models came out.

I have used my cyclo planter for 25 yrs ,, always does fine ,good ssed placement , we put a tool bar up front and added yetter coulters... does a good job no tillin ,,. btw ..the seed discs are offset ,,. that is a big plus

Depends on what you want to use it for. We ran both 400's and 800's and had very good luck with them.
The 400, 500,800, 900, 955 use air pressure to force the seed into a drum. A cutoff wheel stops the airflow and the seed drops into a tube and air forces the seed to the furrow. The planters are dependable and will plant the population you want per acre, but the placement of the seed in the furrow is not perfect. You will have skips and seeds bunched up.
Things to look for...seals around the hopper lid and drum. Faulty seals will keep the drum from building up to the desired pressure. Check the cutoff wheels to make sure they are not flat on one side and that they are sealing properly. Check other wear parts...chains, sprockets, furrow openers, and press wheels.
The 400 is a very simplistic planter. The 800 was much better with a much improved furrow opener. Others are right they go mostly for scrap price. If you want a planter for no-till or harsh soils, the 400 is not the planter. Get an 800, 900 or 955.

But when the gauge gauge wheel or firming wheel [ the wheel in back] goes over a 2 inch clump of dirt that lifts the seed out of the ground a inch, and chances are it wont germinate, then comes up when it rains, latter, and gets covered up when u cultivate. Its a poor design.

the whole unit would not waste time with one now days, get you 800 series at least i ran 900 whe last time i played in dirt. they can be bought cheap now days anyway. all my land now is in crp and rented out making more now then ever did farming myself. last month 800 sold for $500.00

Spend your money on a JD 7000,you wont be disappointed. Ive had a IH 400, scraped it, and a CaseIH 900,sold it.
