John Deere BW Disk

I have a BW 16 1/2" wing disk. I put new blades on it, I'm pulling it with my Oliver 1850, 18.4x34 rears with the drawbar turned down. The adjuster on the hitch is turned all the way up and it still throws a ridge in the middle if I go over 4 1/2 to 5 mph. I'm thinking about trying to take the short top spring off of the adjuster to see if I can lower the front of the disk more. It is set on the most angle possible, I wonder if I reduced the angle on the rear gang if that would reduce the amount of dirt thrown in the middle? Any ideas?? Thanks, Chris

I have had a couple of 20Ft BWF disks years ago. both hilled up the dirt in the middle if you pushed the speed much. Not sure if all of them did this.

I agree that you need to reduce the angle of the rear gangs. If that doesn't correct problem you could add a middle breaker shank & sweep to frame behind where rear gangs meet.

Any and all disks will do that with some speed. I had a McCormick and it had 3 angle settings, used on full setting on front, middle on rear or middle on front and straughtest on rear because of that. The old drag disks all were made to be able to adjust the rear angle to compensate. Only the ones with non adjustable gangs are a problem on that.

A good practice in good working dirt is to run the rear gangs at one setting shallower angle than the fronts. Also, there should be two places on the rear gang to mount the pivot pin for the angle adjustment. Setting the pin to the wide setting can help your problem as well. Mike

Dumb question:
Would sliding the rear gangs out an inch or two be another way to reduce center ridging at higher speeds? As speed increases the front gang throws soil out further. By shifting the rear gang to match where the front gang throws the soil, the rear gang should be able to do a better job of leveling.

Did you replace the blades on both gangs or just the front blades?
