This came across my facebook feed the other day and had to comment on it. They make 30 lb net-wrapped bales. They cost $12000. I commented on the pictures that you could buy a small square baler and make a larger baler that's easier to handle, easier to stack, and easier to feed (can feed flakes instead of the whole bale). The response from the company is that the round bales are more weather resistant and these are easier and safer to run on side slope and you can run them with a subcompact tractor. Can't argue with the subcompact tractor comment, they say you can run them with as little as 15hp.

I still don't see the point in 30 lb round bales and don't know how to cut and rake a small enough windrow that this thing could take. Not to mention the $12k price tag, ouch. I spent a grand total of $3100 on a mower, rake, baler, and tractor to make squares.

they have one for the BCS walk behind tractor that makes a cute little round bale. Costs like 9000 bucks.
Watched a vieo of it in action and can't say that I would ever like to spend a day doing that.

I sell Grillos, the competitor to BCS. I've sold two of these balers. You're right that you can buy a 40 year old small square baler for less, but you gotta deal with knotters, and you gotta have a tractor capable of pulling it. These are made for small fields where a square baler and tractor can't reasonably go. I've heard they're popular for use in pine straw because they can go between the trees. They're just as handy and useable as a square baler. You stack them vertically in the mow.

That said, I agree that they're not economically feasible for most potential buyers. I often tell people they need to be doing 4 to 10 acres to come close to justifying it. Anything less and they should just haul it in loose. More, and they should get a square baler and tractor.

Here's a pic of a friend baling his hay.
