14t john deere baler

Just bought a 14t baler to use as back up baler, broke a knotter frame on my 275 nh and borrowed a buddys 24t to finish up. Can't find a used knotter frame so I found 14t on craigs list. The baler had been setting in barn for 20 years, a little dusty and one flat tire but paint still looks good and rolled it over by hand and it tied. Tool box has shear pins and owner manual nuts and bolts grease gun and some wire in it, like the old guy left it years ago.I'm gonna oil and grease it up and cross my fingers if it stays good weather cut and bale a few more acres and see how it does. My buddy says the 14t will be a lot slower than the 275 nh what do you guys think ? Any other things I should check or do to the 14t before I start baling with it? I've baled with nh 275 and don't know anything about John deer except the parts seem to be a little $$$$$$. Advice you guys have given me has saved a lot of time and money.
Thanks Joe

Yes,the 14 will be slower than the NH.Since this just a "backup" machine, who cares. It will get your crop in. Pour a qt of oil on each roll of that old dryed out wire.Vastly improves tying. As was said, make sure the plunger stop works as it should. BTW.... My "backup" baler is an early '50s IH #55W. Hasnt been used in 5 years, but will save my butt if needed.

I 2nd the plunger stop working thing that can cost you the whole machine. Don't ask me how I know that. As for slow I have used JD 14Ts and NH 271 and a few between and never noticed a difference but then I do tend to use first gear for most stuff and never get in a hurry

IMHO - a good baler. Not very fast - but fast is relative. My old New Holland 68 isn't very "fast", but I can keep the boys on the rack behind it very busy.

I think if you jam the hay into a 14t, you'll be shearing pins - OTOH, you will really like the bale shape spitting out of the old 14t.

Good luck,
Bill

If it has wire then it is not a 14T. Wonder what it actually is? 14T was the very first model of twine tie baler Deere ever built starting in 1956 while the W116 was still being built as the wire tie model. There was also a W114 baler but scarce that was also wire tie and on both the W114 and W116 the bales came out the side. It might be a 24W I think that replaced the W116.
