Cutting edge for loader bucket.

The loader bucket on my Deere 2010 does not have a cutting edge attached. I'm using it to load a lot of rock and gravel and I'm afraid I'm damaging the bucket.

Two questions

What thickness of steel should a cutting edge for a loader bucket be made of?

How far forward of the edge of the loader bucket should the cutting edge protrude?

I'm hoping it won't be to difficult to make a cutting edge.

Grader blades are curved. Flat edges work better. When I sold Industrial parts for a JD dealer I sold a lot of universal edges that could be bolted on (you may need to drill mounting holes). One edge was 1/2 x 6" and another was 5/8 x 8" both 8' long. Backhoes used somewhat shorter ones. Also some steel suppliers may have something available. Usually about 2" extended out from the bucket. All the above edges were made to be reversed when worn down.

I buy bucket edge from a welding shop, same sizes as denny k. I don"t like bolt-ons, so I weld them on. Also a short vertical piece for each end of the bucket. Handy "step" for carrying pipe, etc with the bucket, or lifting bale rings, etc.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

So 1/2 inch steel is probably enough?

I don't want to go through all the work of getting one figured out and then have it bend all to heck on the first use.

Thanks.

The blade edges are made of a Manganese Steel, better suited for abrasion resistance than mild steel.
Don't install it on the wrong side like this idjit did. Makes it hard to fill the bucket when the edge requires a 40 degree angle to cut. He fully welded it, so I am going to have to scarf it off and install the used one I got on the bottom where it belongs
