IHCPloughman/Others-MoldboardPlugging

I've been trying to plow and some type of weed--long, tough "runners" (bindweed???) keeps wrapping around the curved beams above the moldboards. What can I do about this? I'd like to put some type of knife blade between the plow frame and the top of the moldboards but dunno if that'd work or how I'd fasten the blades. Ideas? kelly

You have to have the coulters and they have to be set correctly and not wore too small. Then take a piece of No. 9 wire 9-10' long and tie the end to the bracket that holds the coulters on and it will roll thod weeds under. You may have to replace that wire a couple of times depending on how much you are doing.

I could see how field bindweed would be an issue without rolling coulters, so I would recommend using them. Sharpen the coulter blade with an angle grinder.

Or, I wouldn't normally recommend mowing before plowing, but maybe rotary mowing would cut the bindweed into manageable pieces.

Covering wire only helps with standing vegetation taller than 8" inches or so. It needs to be tall enough for the wire to bend it over. Have to keep in mind that using wire could cover trash worse, not better, because it can pin loose residue on the furrow slice rather than letting it fall to the furrow bottom as the slice is rolling over.
