JD Tandem Disc Blades

The front blades on my Deere tandem disc appear to be about 15" and the rears are about 17" (IIRC). Is this usual (that front discs are smaller than rear ones? The rears don't appear to be too bad, but the fronts need replacing very badly. I was hoping to go a bit larger on the fronts but it looks as if the two center discs will be rubbing together if they are a larger diameter. Ideas? Thanks, kelly

Order new blades from Ag Supply or Shoup plus any other parts you might think you need. Usually, an 18" blade isn't too pricey, and just replace all of the front blades. Use one of the old blades on the end to prevent ridging. And after you tighten the gang, run it for a couple of hours and then tighten the shaft nut again....

Your disk is just worn out. 18" was probably the original size. the two center blade rubbing together is normal. dont worry, just run it.As was said,Sloan,or Shoup are the best places for parts.

I've got a dumb follow-up question. When I replace the blades, do I use a huge pipe wrench to hold the gang and then another huge crescent wrench to tighten the nut on the end? Are there better ways? thanks again, kelly

Make sure all the spools are clean. Dirt between parts will pulverize and loosen the gang. Big wrenches, cheater bars, and double nuts.

After you pull it apart, and I'll highly recommend using a die grinder for MOST of the end nut, then finish it off by splitting it with a cold chisel, order a new one from ASC. They're often very hard to get off, and not expensive to replace. If you can borrow a set of disc wrenches, though, the whole job will be easier.....
