New Holland Baler - Adjustable Feeder Back

Anyone have a New Holland baler with an adjustable feeder back panel - to the rear, behind the feeder tine assembly?

Don't think the 570/575 type balers have it, but earlier ones like the 565 and 316 do - maybe others, like the 276? Not sure how far back this design dates.

Do you ever use it? Adjust it in/out - what conditions, does it work?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Bill

Don't have the baler in front of me, but pretty certain the 68 baler doesn't have an adjustable feeder back. Took a look-see at the NH parts diagrams and don't see one there either.

I'm thinking that when you push the feeder back to the forward position, the grass as it comes into the baler would pile up quicker and with that the feeder tines would send into the bale chamber a taller charge of hay - giving the plunger a target to mash that is as tall as the face of the plunger.

I was thinking that the 68 is such a slow baler that it doesn't take much to fill up the pickup.

In fact, we found, to my surprise, we went around the field baling up reminents and a few very thin windrows, after replacing the wood plunger slides, setting the knife within spec to the stationary (sharp knife too), plunger adjusted correctly top to bottom to the bale chamber, setting for a 32 inch very tight bale, it didn't seem to matter how we fed the baler, it chucked out beautiful brick bales.

I've got my eyes pealed for a backup baler as you never know with 50+ year old equipment, but not sure how a new/newer baler could have punched out such nice bales as this old 68.

Of course now that I've bragged - could a breakdown be far away.... ;)
