I just bought a John Deere manure spreader # 34, know nothing about it. It has a yellow rope on the front, what does it do, in gauge the spreader. Need some help on thes one.
Thanks Frank IL

Pulling rope should change speed of floor chain

If it's like the #44's I ran for my BTO neighbor, the PTO engages the beaters, then you pull the rope a couple times and each pull the indicator bar #14 in Jim's parts view extends out or in further showing the draper chain in the box is in one of the 4-5 speeds, ranging from slow or stop to clean-out. Sorry I can't remember which way it was, been right at 40 years since I ran them, but it's obvious which is slow speed and which is clean out. When in clean out, just pull rope one more time to get to stop.

Compared to the little R spreader Dad had I liked those BIG '44's the neighbor had. The 33 is just a little bit smaller than the 44.

The rope controls the speed of the web chain. If I remember right, a #34 the chain has three speeds, each pull of the rope advances the web to the next speed. The fourth position stays in high speed and shuts off the beater for clean out. Another pull on the rope brings the web chain back to the lowest speed and re-engages the beater. Shut off the PTO before bringing the web back to the beater engaged position.

I have a 34 which I bought and rebuilt a few years ago. Great unit for the small farmer. The rope does indeed control the bed chain speed. Only complaint is that it throws rocks at the operator on the tractor worse than any other spreader I have used. I use my cab tractor when possible.

Jim, thanks for the info, have another question. With the control all the way bank, the scraper bar don't move, but the drum turns. when I move the control up one notch the drums stops turning and the scraper bar start moving back . If I move it all the way forward, the only thing that moves is the scraper bar. Not sure why the drum stops.

Thanks Frank IL
