Using a 70 john deere for post digging chores.

Looking for information on doing this. Is it advisable? The 70 doesn't get used much and I'd like to leave the other tractors alone and not tie them up with a digger. What can you tell me about doing it this way.

i would be sure the old digger has soft bolt sheer pins installed or the slip clutch is working properly.

a 70 will tear your post hole digger all to pieces if you hit something solid and someone has installed a grade 8 bolt in place of a proper soft sheer bolt.

keep extra sheer bolts in the tool box. much better to install a broken sheer bolt from time to time, than try to find post hole digger gears.

I do not normally loan my post hole digger, but if I do, its to someone who will care for it and I also send along a handful of soft sheer bolts.

Question. Does a 70 have forceful down power? If not, and a lot of tractors didn't in the 50s, you will nead an auger that digs itself into the hole, with the lift doing just that, lifting it only.

That's what I'm looking for. No it doesn't force down. May need to make sure teeth are sharp.

Shear bolts are grade 8 or harder hence the word shear.Soft bolts twist and end up getting into bind ans still allow it to spin

Direct from the Frontier (Rotomec) PHD manual:

"Maintain driveline shear bolt at all times. A faulty shear bolt can inflict extreme damage to the implement. A grade 2 shear bolt that measures 1⁄4”x21⁄2” should always be used on model PHD100. A grade 2 shear bolt that measures 3/8”x3” should always be used on models PHD200, PHD300, and PHD400. Never replace the shear bolt with any bolt longer or of a harder grade."

45,
Guess I misspelled the word shear, but I would not want you putting grade 8 shear bolts in my old post hole digger.

I will just continue to use grade two and change them out when necessary.

Hopefully no broken tractor pto shafts or digger shafts for me.

No tractor was factory down perssure 3 point. However a "saginaw" or similar aftermarket add on three point could be set up for down pressure. My super M is one such tractor/3 point. Beware, downpressure can get you in a 'world or hurt' if not careful.

Delta---Have to disagree with you here on the "down pressure"

issue. I had a MH 22 at one time and it did indeed have "down

pressure". BUT---you could remove a bolt from the linkage, and

it would eliminate that feature.

Question should it mount up? An 800 hitch that is what was made for that tractor does not use a normal top link. If that is what you have will that bracket to use the hitch fit in your digger. Then either the 800 hitch of aftermarket 3 point is will it actually fit and mount up.
