My 28 ft Kaufman gooseneck is having a problem with the lights going off and on. They are either on and all are working fine or they are completely off. The socket on the truck is fine and I put a new plug on the trailer. Trailer is only 5 yrs old. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Since you said ALL the ground is a good place to start for that problem. The light plug should have a ground lead, and make sure it is connected both to the trailer and the truck side. Grounding through the hitch is not dependable.

Not trying to hijack a thread, but, I have to ask. Since most/many/some trailer lighting relies on the ball to hitch ground connection, should one not grease the ball every now and then?? I'll remind you all, "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask". Even sounds like a stupid question to me, the guy doing the wondering. lol gobble

(quoted from post at 23:40:38 09/19/15) No trailer systems should be grounded through the ball. Period.

I agree trailer lights should have a good ground wire. Most trailer light problems I've encountered were ground wire related or plug-in not making good connection.

Same thing happened to me. 3 year old car trailer with no trailer brakes. The they put a sheet metal screw thru the paint and never bothered to remove the paint. The screw started to rust and the was the end of it. Scrapped the paint off and drilled thru the frame. Put it on with a bolt this time.

I would be willing to bet you have a broken ground wire on the truck. When the lights work they are probably grounding through the hitch and when they all go out the ground is probably completely lost. Either that or you have a broken ground wire on the trailer...
