I need a part for my "new to me" hay rake (Interna

I just picked this old girl up for sixty dollars. I have a few questions about it. First being I have a broken casting, it has been welded in the past I would like to just find one that is not broken. The part number I believe is WA534, but it is hard to read. Does anyone know where to find one of these? Also my front right wheel is bent I know most are is there anyway of getting it straightened? Additionally it is very loose, what is involved in taking the play up in it, has anyone every replaced the wear items in one?

Thanks a million,

Are you sure that is a International rake? There are several things that do not look right to be a Internatoinal (McCormic). The lifting lever is not McCormic, The rear wheel assembly is not McCormic, Not even the drive wheels are McCormick. I have handled several 3 bar McCormicks that were rake tedder versions in the 3 models of them that were made from 1916 to 1960 and the 4 bar enclosed gear rake only that was built 1940 to 1960 and have part of frame here yet of a 3 bar enclosed gear rake only that was built 1939 up for a few years but it was not built for many. None of the McCormick rakes in that Time span had spoke rear wheels but sollid disk wheels and were not in a yoke but slid on end of a curved rear axle. The clutch to enguage the real is also not McCormic. Lots of other things also say not McCormic. I have the dealer parts books here for all of them. If it is a McCormick then it is a model previous to 1916. And some of them had a wood bar on to hold the teeth in place instead of steel clamps. I think I know where one of those might still be located.

I can't say for sure I will look again tomorrow, but i am almost positive I saw the IHC symbol cast into the parts I will double check tomorrow.

Leroy, I double checked and it appears to have IHC casting marks on all the castings. Does anyone else know maybe what model it could be?
Mike

If Leroy does not recognize your rake then likely no one else will either. I know that I do not recognize it.

If it were me, I would weld or braze that broken piece up the best I could and hope for the best. Additionally, It looks like there may be enough meat left that you could strategically drill an additional hole in the corner of that one piece for extra holding power. Even a small 5/16 " diameter bolt would do wonders in supporting the repair. If enough meat then a 3/8" bolt would be even better.

FWIW: I have had good look using Flux core wire on my similar in design JD 594 hay rakes that had a couple broken castings. In essence I used the broken part as a template and wrapped the whole broken piece in weld. It was a slow process but it worked for me even though this is not the approved way to do cast repairs. My philoshy was you know when you tape something and eventually you get enough tape wrapped around it that the tape starts sticking to itself and starts sticking better. I did the same thing only with weld. That all said, A safer and better repair would be to braze it.

As for the bent wheel. A few chains securing it to a fence post, tree, etc, and then use a come-along pulling here and there will likely get it good enough to use. About 5.0 mph is the fastest you gonna pull that thing when in use so it does not need to be perfect since travel speed is slow.

Otherwise it looks pretty good. Hope you enjoy using it.

You could also fabricate a suitable structural replacement out of plain ole mild steel to replace the broken casting. Would be real easy to do if you can weld.

(quoted from post at 06:16:36 09/18/15) pre-1920 Osborne during the IHC period of ownership.

OH! That makes sense because the casting marks seemed a bit different to me from normal IHC stuff. The I and H was clearly visible overlaid over one another. But what is normally a C surrounding the whole works seemed like it wasn't quite a C. I believe it is a IH overlaid surrounded by a O. What are the chances of finding a part or a parts unit with good casting?
Thanks everyone for your input.
Mike

I would have no idea what that stands for. Back at that time there were a lot of no longer in extiance small reagonall companys. Know bad speller. If might help if would know where you are located. I am in western Ohio.

International was forced to sell off the Osborne line by the federal government in 1920 and Emerson-Brantingham bought it. JI Case bought Emerson-Brantingham in 1928. Not sure if the later JI Case rakes would have that part on them or not.

In his pictures there is nothing simular to that In the Case 3 bar enclosed gear No. 160 and Case 4 bar enclosed gear No. 170 rakes so it would have to be befor them.
